Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

Last Friday the College hosted its first Sports Assembly for the year. This assembly provided an opportunity as a College community to publicly acknowledge those who will represent Marist College Ashgrove in our 1st AFL, Cricket, Volleyball and Open Swimming Squad in 2021.

Mr Newman spoke at the assembly about getting involved, enjoying sport and reiterated the College’s expectations. Although enjoyment and participation are fundamental to why we play sport at the College, he mentioned that we should always lose graciously and win humbly – that’s what Marist men do!

The way we wear our uniforms, conduct ourselves at school and in public, the way we play and train, the way we support each other and the attitude we have to want to give our very best among many other things is important to us at here. We ask our boys to strive to be the best they can be in all facets, not because they are asked, but because they have a sense of pride in themselves and our College.

We recognise the importance of school work and studies as being the highest priority for our boys. In amidst of our desire to be the best we can be with regards to our school work, we are mindful that as a community, we are not only concerned about intellectual growth but the holistic development of each student.

Involvement in the College’s co-curricular program, whether that be sport, music or cultural, can assist to develop a person in many ways. Participation in sport can teach those involved about resilience, the importance of teamwork, trust in yourself and others. It can teach you about hard work, determination and outcomes. It is a way we can learn about and experience the euphoria of winning. It teaches us about humility, we learn about losing, sportsmanship, integrity, honour and pride. These elements support a student’s social and emotional development. The development of a student in these areas can’t be achieved through studying a book or gazing at a computer screen. You experience these things by doing.

Like all things in life, its best to achieve a balance. All work and no play can make for a dull boy. All play and no work can make for an unemployed young man.

The simple message is this – we urge students to balance their studies with some co-curricular activities. Getting involved and enjoying these co-curricular activities will help to develop them into stronger and more balanced people.

We congratulate everyone who participated in the sports program over the weekend including all swimmers, cricketers, volleyball and AFL players. Our results were outstanding. This week we approach Round 3 of competition v Villanova College. This will be a big round for all players so I challenge all boys to ‘step up’ and produce their very best. Let’s show everybody the amount of pride we have in our great College!

CRICKET – Brendan Furdek (Co-ordinator)

Two rounds are now in the books, and it was another successful weekend of cricket with the program winning 7/8 matchups against SEC. Our 1st XI ventured out to Ipswich hoping to post back-to-back wins. Below are a few words from our 1st XI captain Jacob Kumaru:

Eddie’s got off to a very strong start before some quality bowling in the heat from Jesse O’Neil (1/30 off 10 overs) and Nick Muir (1/21 off 5 overs) applied the brakes. Pressure on the tail from Baxter White (2/32 off 8.5 overs) and Jacob Kumaru (4/22 off 9 overs) kept Eddie’s at bay, being bowled out in the 48th over for 168. The batters were very positive throughout the innings, with the openers Jaxon Barwell (45 off 67 balls) and Jakub Bennett (40 off 49 balls) leading the way before Cooper Mackie (42* off 23 balls) and Jesse O’Neil (30* off 32 balls) guided us home for a dominant 8 wicket win in the 29th over.

The Year 7 age group have built on from there round one success, with both As and Bs posting more than 150 runs for the 2nd week in a row. An outstanding performance from Jonah Wilde with 86 runs off 104 balls guided the 7A’s to victory. Jimmy Garden stole the show in the 7B match after he batted for the entire innings scoring 102 not out. Scoring a century in junior school cricket is an unbelievable achievement, and I would like to congratulate Jimmy on an outstanding knock!

The year 8As and Bs have continued their undefeated start with two outstanding performances against SEC. 8A’s had another nail biter for the second week in a row, however, emerged victorious against SEC on the final few deliveries.

A clinical performance by 9Bs who matched up against SEC 9A. They bowled them out for 65 runs in the 34th over. Flynn Connolly was relentless with his off-stump attack taking 4-18 and Jack Riley took 2-6. Flynn and Jack were also the best contributors with the bat with 23 not out each. The boys were outstanding in the field with 8 catches and 2 run-outs.

It was a great bounce-back performance from 10A’s who got off to a commanding start with Ben Ferguson (37) and Michael Garske (24) putting on a sensible 50 run partnership. Small cameos from the middle order, specific mention to specific mention to Xavier Evans (24), Eric Sebastian (24) and Joe Whitten (15), MCA finished their batting innings on 182. With a solid and defendable target behind them, MCA approached their bowling innings mildly confident they could get the job done. Harry Condon would then strike in the first over, boosting the confidence of the MCA lads. Special mention to bowlers Olly Gordon (2/15), Harry Condon (2/26), Tom Davies (2/24), and Joe Whitten (1/31).

Good luck to all students and coaches this weekend for Round 3 action as we host Villanova College.
