MATHEMATICS LEARNING AREA

MATHS TUTORING

Maths tutoring runs every Wednesday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm in the Library. Maths tutoring is staffed by a Maths Teacher. All students are welcome to attend and receive assistance with homework or classwork. Students can attend for the whole hour or for part of the time.

CAS CALCULATORS

Students in Years 10 to 12 with the exception of students studying Essential/Foundation Maths must have a CAS calculator for Maths lessons. This calculator must remain charged and be brought to every class. Students can take their calculator to the library or the Maths office to be charged or they can charge at home using the USB cord that came with the calculators. Students must have their name on their calculators.

MATHS COMPETITIONS

The Mathematics Learning Area offer a number of competitions as extra-curricular activities throughout the year.

Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CAT) Competition – Wednesday March 24

The CAT Competition is a one-hour problem solving competition that promotes multiple modes of thinking. No computer programming ability is necessary but the competition seeks to identify students with computer programming potential. Open to all students in Years 7 to 12. Entries close March 12.

Australian Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians (AMCYA) – four-week period in Term 2

The Maths Challenge runs over four weeks and exposes students to difficult problems to develop their problem-solving skills. Students will be withdrawn from class for one period per week during the challenge but the majority of the challenge will need to be completed at home. Students are expected to catch up on the classwork they miss while participating in the challenge. Students can use resources to help them with the problems and can discuss the problems with fellow challengers but cannot receive help from anyone else, including their teacher or anyone contactable over the internet (e.g. forum). Open to all students in Years 7 to 10. Entries close end of Term 1.

Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) – Term 3, Week 4 (August)

The Australian Mathematics Competition is an engaging 30 problem competition that demonstrates the importance and relevance of mathematics in students’ everyday lives.

Open to all students in Years 7 to 12. Entries close July 23.

ICAS Mathematics Competition – Term 3, Week 8 (August)

The ICAS Mathematics Competition is a one-hour competition and is our most popular competition. The questions are based on the curriculum for the relevant year level. Students are asked to demonstrate a deeper, integrated and thorough level of learning.
