On Friday 20 November, the College sent a team to compete in the Combined Wagga Wagga High School Open Boys Basketball Gala Day. We were in Draw B with Kildare Catholic College, Mount Austin High School and Kooringal High School. Being in Draw B meant that to progress to the finals we had to defeat all other teams and finish at the top of our side of the draw.

Our first game was against Mount Austin and the boys played well. It was obvious halfway through the first half that we were going to win this match up and we were able to give everyone in the team a good run to ease up the nerves and get into the day.

Our matches against Kooringal High and Kildare Catholic College were a little harder but the boys were playing very well and managed to pull away and win both matches with ease. That meant that we were through to the semi-final against the Christian College team who was second in their draw. This we knew was going to be a much harder game and the boys pushed well from the start. The relatively young Christian College team was not strong enough and our College team was too accurate and professional. Although Christian College fought hard, the our team was victorious and in the end won quite comfortably by around 15 points. This meant that we were through to the grand final against Mater Dei Catholic College.

The match was very tight and extremely low scoring, with both teams defending well. Mater Dei ran a 1 - 3 - 1 zone defense that was difficult for us to gain traction against. At half time there were only 4 points in it with the score 9 - 5 against us. The boys ran hard and were making good headway but with several difficult calls going against us we found ourselves 5 down with a minute to go. Switching to a full court press, we managed to get a turnover and with some quick accurate passing, managed to score under the basket, narrowing the gap to 3. Pressing hard again we got the steal and moved in, with Mater Dei really pouring on the pressure. The defense was strong and with seconds to go we moved the ball around the three-point line looking for the chance to score and perhaps tie the match. The defense was all over us and we couldn’t get a shot away. The seconds ticked by and with a defender right on him Nathan Bloor managed to take the final shot on the buzzer. It looked good all the way but bounced off the ring missing by the narrowest of margins. The final score was 17-20 to Mater Dei Catholic College.

The boys played well the entire day and coming from Group B had played their way through all the other schools to get to the grand final. In the end coming runner up by only three points in a hard fought final against a very strong team was vindication that they deserved to be there. We will definitely start in Group A next year. I was impressed with the way the team approached each game, the sportsmanship and respectful conduct was a credit to themselves and the College and it was a pleasure to assist them on the day. Congratulations team, you were superb.

All glory be to Christ.

The Open Girls Basketball team competed in the Combined Wagga High School competition over the last three weeks, unfortunately losing both round games against Mater Dei Catholic College (40-17) and Kooringal High School (40-34). In the semi-final we played Kooringal High again and were unsuccessful (51-24). This led to us playing off for 3rd position against Kildare Catholic College, where we lost in a very close game (33-31).

Throughout the competition, the team played extremely well with standout performances from Ruby Gillard, Ava Pritchett and Ines Treharne. All of the girls showed considerable improvement over the competition and played very well together as a team.

Nathan Bloor (Year 11) did a fantastic job supporting and guiding the girls on the court with his knowledge of basketball and enthusiasm for the game and his contribution was greatly appreciated.

CWWHSSA Open Boys and Girls Waterpolo Gala Day

Mr Robertson and Mr Harris accompanied a number of water polo players to participate in the annual CWWHSSA Waterpolo Gala Day on Wednesday 25th November at the Oasis Swimming Pool. Conditions were perfect for water sport with the College fielding three girls teams and two boys teams. The Gala Day consisted of teams from Mater Dei Catholic College, Kooringal High School and Wagga High School.

Each girl’s team was competitive in their respective pools, with the Girl’s A Team going undefeated throughout the pool stage. Unfortunately, the Girl’s A Team were defeated by Kooringal High School in the semi-final in a nail-biting shoot out, due to it being all tied up after the two halves. Notable players on the day were Toby Stone, Bridie Willis, Skylah Oliver and Sophie Bruckner.

Both Boy’s Teams played in good spirit throughout the day with the Boy’s A Team going through the competition undefeated. The boy’s came up against Mater Dei Catholic College in the Final, where they won 4 - 2. This was a tremendous effort by the boys who showed excellent teamwork and resilience throughout the day. Notable mentions go to Brody Oliver, Isaac Collingridge and Angus Beggs, with Isaac also winning the Player of the Finals.

Congratulations to all players on an excellent day of Water Polo!!

This squad has been competing in the Combined Wagga Super 6s competition in 15 a side Rugby Union for the past 6 weeks. Our first match saw us defeat Wagga Wagga High 57-0, our second match we defeated Wagga Christian College 66-5, our third match we defeated Kooringal High 12-7, our fourth match we defeated Kildare Catholic College 22-7, and in our final round game last week we defeated Mater Dei Catholic College 20-7, led by a man of the match effort from Harry Allen including a runaway intercept try.

The team has truly had strong performers all across the park and solid depth has been a real key to our success. Particularly consistent players have been Jock Heeney, Jack Lloyd, Harry Allen and Gerard Okerenyang. We have seemingly had the perfect mix of rugby know-how and natural athletic ability.

The team played the Grand Final on Thursday 26th November at 6:30pm against Kildare Catholic College. The game was a nail biter and resulted in a thrilling 15-13 win on the final siren with a successful penalty goal kicked by Tom Fitzgerald. It was a game that will live forever in Mr Richardson's memory. It was such a shame that such an exciting game was not able to be watched live due to COVID-19 restrictions. Congratulations to all players on a brilliant performance throughout the entire series.

Douglas Shield Open Boys Cricket Round 2

Round 2 of the Douglas Shield Competition saw the boys head away from Wagga and travel to Shellharbour to play against Shellharbour Anglican College. The following players represented the College for this match:

George Carn

Ryan Collins

Luke Fellows

Tom Fitzgerald

Billy Glanvill

Josh Hosie

Thomas Howard

Rhauri MacLeod

Judd McLeod

Sam McNaughton

Lachlan Payne

Joe Perryman

Sam Stening

Coach: Mr Michael Reynolds

The Open Boys’ Douglas Shield Cricket team travelled to Shellharbour to play Shellharbour Anglican College on Tuesday in Round 2 of the competition. The team came away with a very strong win, bowling Shellharbour out for 92 runs in the 31st over, which now sees them play William Clarke College, Kellyville in Round 3 early next year. Before the toss there was much debate between the boys on whether to call heads or tails based on probability of what had occurred from previous tosses. It was great to see the boys put into practice what they had learnt in mathematics, they lost the toss!

Shellharbour elected to bat and it didn’t take long for Joe Perryman to strike, bowling the opening batsmen for zero, which got us off to a strong start. The Shellharbour captain batted well making 34 but was the only batsmen to make any real progress against a College attack that bowled consistently. Perryman ended with figures of 3 for 23, Luke fellows 2 for 13, Judd McLeod 2 for 8 and Bill Glanvill 1 for 6 and Lachlan Payne and George Carn taking their first wickets for the college finishing with 1 for 15 and 1 for 11 respectively.

We started our batting innings strongly with openers Josh Hosie (13) and Tom Fitzgerald (13) contributing well. Luke fellows made a well compiled 18 runs before Joe Perryman (16 no.) and Rhauri MacLeod (16 no.) saw the team safely home in the 22nd over.

Congratulations to all players, including four new debutants into the Opens team with Sam Mcnaughton, Lachlan Payne, George Carn and Tom Fitzgerald putting on their baggy green caps for the first time. The boys are very keen to continue this winning habit when the competition recommences in Term One next year.

Wiburd Shield Junior Boys Cricket Round 2

Round 2 of the Wiburd Shield Competition saw the boys head away from Wagga and travel to Punchbowl to play against Inaburra High School. The following players represented the College for this match:

Harry Austin

Harrison Brown

Samuel Drew

Jude Fuller

Jack Glanvill

Tom Holden

Harry Isaac

Hugh Jenkins

Finlay Jenkins

Juanu Jonck

Damian Kalmeier

Sidney Lenton

Vishal Sharma

Oliver Spackman

Thomas Wilson

William Wolfgarten

Coach: Mr Luke Richardson

At the completion of their innings, we reached 120 runs. Inaburra made a total of 123, only losing 3 wickets in the 36th over. Inaburra successfully defeated us. This result has eliminated us from the competition.
