Year 9 QUEST Maria Island Camp UPDATE

We are writing to advise you that the Year 9 QUEST Camp has been reduced by one day.

The School was recently informed by Parks and Wildlife staff on Maria Island that the campground at Darlington, where our School group will be based, is booked by another group on Thursday night and Friday morning. Given the size of our large group, and the significant challenges involved with moving the group to a campground 11 kilometres south of Darlington for one night, we have decided instead to reduce the camp to a 3-day experience. This decision was based on a number of factors, but the most important of these was to program a rewarding and fulfilling set of camp activities in and around the northern part of Maria Island, and so reduce time spent on unnecessary travel to and from a campsite.

A new parent letter will be sent to all Year 9 parents and guardians in the next few days.

9 QUEST Orienteering Activity - This Friday!

As part of the 9 QUEST Program in Term 1, we will be heading off-campus this Friday 12th February to Waterworks Reserve in South Hobart to complete a set of Orienteering courses. Students will be in small groups and will use a map and compass to navigate along a permanent orienteering course set up by Orienteering Tasmania.

Reminder - Students should bring all of the following equipment, regardless of forecast weather:

  • PE uniform including pair of joggers with good grip
  • Morning tea & lunch (There are free barbeques at Waterworks Reserve and students are welcome to bring something appropriate to cook for lunch.)
  • Day pack (school backpack okay)
  • At least 1 litre of drinking water
  • A sunhat & sunscreen
  • A waterproof rain jacket
  • A warm fleece long-sleeve top / jacket

Permission forms (copy below) were sent home via email and must be returned tomorrow (Thursday) to the office or via email to david.witcomb@scc.tas.edu.au

Years 11/12 (DP/TCE)

Students have settled into their work schedule quickly and cheerfully. A mentor has been appointed for each student and their mentor will be 'touching base' with them this week to check in and also to organise a weekly meeting time. Students are encouraged to develop a study schedule incorporating their daily classes, study time at school and planned revision and class work at home. This is vitally important for their self-management and progress. Their mentor will provide support, encouragement and valuable assistance in their journey through the school year.

Year 11/12 Camp Postponed

The Year 11/12 Camp planned for 22-24 February has been postponed. The new dates for the camp are Monday 10th - Wednesday 12th May. Further details will follow in forthcoming weeks. We apologise for the inconvenience. The later date for the Study Camp will be more conducive to both Year 11 and Year 12 in preparation for internal assessments, essays, study and preparation for examinations.

Year 11/12 Study periods

A letter of permission for students to leave the College during study lessons is attached. Please complete and return to the office or to Mr Witcomb (david.witcomb@scc.tas.edu.au) or Mrs Schuth (veronica.schuth@scc.tas.edu.au) Year 11 students will begin this in Term 2.

Further to this a letter of permission for students driving cars and/or having student passengers will be sent out in the next few days.
