Staff lunch during Professional Learning - Positive Partnerships

Positive Partnerships

Prior to students starting last week, staff of Southern attended a 2-day workshop with Positive Partnerships, a national project funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Skills and Employment through the Helping Children with Autism program.

The workshop was a follow-on from 6 months of Zoom training undertaken by an action team of 10 teachers. The workshop focus on Autism helped us to evaluate what we are already doing for our autistic students across the school K – 12, consider what improvements we still need to implement, and set a plan to achieve some new goals. Teachers came away with a better understanding of how autism affects students and how we can cater for their needs and celebrate their contributions to our school.

Two Southern parents came and spoke of their experiences in bringing up autistic children and one of the presenters was also autistic. Hearing first-hand from each of these people certainly opened our eyes and helped create an empathetic environment for discussing our school’s approach to educating students with additional needs.

Over the coming weeks you will be updated about our conversations and plans as we continue to learn and plan for the future. As the program name states, this process involves “partnership” so if you have contributions you would like to make to our journey please be in touch.

On behalf of the Action Team,

Denise Arnold and Martin Prins

School Zone Speed Limits

There has been some concern expressed about speeding on Redwood Road and when turning into the school driveway. Police will be checking on speed limit adherence. Please check your speed!

School Fees

A letter will be sent home next week with your Term 1 fees explaining our payment options for the year and notifying you of the payments required for weekly, fortnightly or monthly instalments to manage your school fees.

Please return the forms as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact Deanne Edwards or Lyndall Tilley -accounts@scc.tas.edu.au

Second Hand Uniform

The College only keeps a very small amount of second hand uniform for emergencies and for distribution within our chaplaincy programme. We have now been inundated and cannot accept any more donations at this stage. Please do not use the office as a drop off/pick up point.

See separate page of this newsletter for information about the SCC Midford Uniform Shop, including new trading hours starting this week!

SCC Bus

All students travelling on the SCC bus which travels to the northern suburbs and eastern shore, should have received a letter from the bus driver last week (handed to students on the bus) which contains important information and must be returned to the office ASAP.

If you have not received one, please contact the office this week.

Dedication Service - Change of date

This very important event is held at the beginning of each year to commit the year to the Lord, enjoy getting to know each other and hear a little bit about 2021. It is an opportunity for us to join together and seek God’s blessing for the children, families, teachers and, indeed, the whole College community for 2021.

We have decided, primarily for access reasons, to change the date of our Dedication Service and BBQ – to be advised – to coincide with the official opening of the completed carpark. Please update your calendars to reflect this and spread the word. Therefore the Dedication Service is no longer on February 9th. We will advise you of the new date of the combined Dedication Service and Official Carpark opening.

ICT Introduction and Training

The College will be running training sessions for both students and parents in 2021. The initial training session will be for the parents of students new to the College in 2021. This session will be held on Tuesday 2nd March from 7-8pm. Students and parents will be given an introduction to the features of the laptop, as well as information that may assist parents with their child’s computer use.

Assemblies

Assemblies are held fortnightly on a Tuesday for students only.

Late Arrivals

Please remind your children that those who arrive late must sign in at the office.

Please ensure that your children arrive before 8.45am to prevent classroom disruption at the start of the day.

Collecting your Child for an Appointment

If you need to collect your child for an appointment during school hours, please notify your child's teacher via email or handwritten note, and the College office - admin@scc.tas.edu.au - so that we can have your child ready for collection from the office where you will need to sign them out. Please avoid recess and lunch time collections for ease of locating your child.

Gastroenteritis

We have had a few incidences of Gastroenteritis over the past week. Please be advised that children are not to return to school until they have been free from vomiting or diarrhoea for at least 48 hours from their last episode.
