Year 10 Careers Experience Week – June 21-25

The last week of Term 2 saw our Year 10s participate in Work Experience either virtually or on employer’s sites.  By participating in work experience students have an opportunity to explore possible career options, increase independence, self-confidence as well as gain an understanding of the work environment and the expectations of employers.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many students were unable to access the work placements they had arranged.  Digital platform, The Careers Department, provided a virtual work experience that proved beneficial.  It offered the opportunity for students to obtain real-world exposure to industries that they are interested in, or are completely unaware of.

Students were asked, "Which employability skills do you feel you most developed this week?"

"I can solve and analyze problems calmly. The motivation to persevere and a positive personality are also very important."

"I developed time management skills and improved on organisation."

The Year 10 Careers Experience offered students the ability to:

  • improve their workplace readiness,
  • learn transferable skills,
  • identify the skills that need to be developed, and
  • complete a project in an industry area of interest.

Some of the industries covered were Medical, Social Work, UX/UI Designers, Early Education, Graphic Designers and Social Media Strategists.

Students were provided with digital tasks, where they learnt about employment rights, processes, OH&S issues, teamwork and other work-related skills, as well as the very necessary soft skills that students require in today’s world of work.  At the end of the week students were involved in presentations to staff and students, where they shared their experiences and skills gained by participating in the digital world of work.

Of the students who physically participated in work experience on-site, there were a variety of industries, such as Automotive, Building and Construction, Office Administration, Private Investigation, Electrical, Child Care, Education, Health, Equine, Retail, Real Estate and Social Media strategists. Whilst on work placement students were able to gain self-understanding, maturity and independence, develop work related skills, increase the opportunity to gain part time employment, understand how the school curriculum relates to the world of work, gain new skills and the opportunity to “try out different industries.”

Whether year 10 students participated in a virtual or a physical work experience week, all students gained a fuller understanding of different industries, skills and expectations of the working world, that will surely benefit them in their future career pathways.

Below reflects two of our year 10 students’ week during their work experience and photos of year 10 students who either participated on site or virtually.

STUDENT REFLECTION

Our work experience placement at a local primary school, was an amazing insight into the world of teaching. We were able to work with children and also to observe what it was really like, from the teacher’s perspective.

We helped mark work, prepared and conducted activities, assisted teachers and students with work tasks and generally interacted with the students in the classes. We recognised that there was a different side to the education system; while working with teachers and students.

We were lucky enough to be taken out on the school's inter-school sports day. It was awesome to go out of the school environment and support the grade 5/6s and be a part of the sports day and celebrate their sporting achievements.
In conclusion we loved our teaching experience and would definitely consider education as a career pathway.

STUDENT REFLECTION

On the 21st of June, all year 10s got an opportunity to get a delightful experience of what they want to do in their future career. From this week, I now have a job in Forest Hill Priceline and learned plenty of new things that I did not expect at all. For instance, I learned how to stock shelves, scanning missing barcodes, organising the medication forms, making sure all the expired property and medicine have been thrown out, communicating with customers along with helping them, and most importantly making sure the customer has scanned the Victorian Covid-19 QR code, etc.

This week, I’m appreciative to all the Priceline employees and my 2 managers for helping me throughout the difficulties I had, and especially to DSC for allowing us to explore what it’s like in the future.

To all the years 10 next year, please take this “work experience” seriously due to it actually helping to show you the pathway of what you want to be.
