Short but sweet!

JUNIOR GIRLS AFL

Once again our sports program has been forced to pivot due to COVID-19.  However, we managed to squeeze in our Junior Girls AFL Round Robin on the 14th of July, where they played fantastic on a cold and wet day. Playing well as a team, they won their first two matches. Unfortunately, they ran out of legs in their third game and fell behind by a couple of goals late in the second half.  A great effort though, girls!

The year 7 and 8 girls participated in a footy round robin on Thursday, July 14th. We battled against other schools, and we came in third place. We won two of the three games we played, and given it was our first time playing together, we all worked well as a team.

On the 14th of July, the junior year 7 and 8 students participated in a day of Girls Football. This day is where girls can enjoy being outside and playing a couple of games of Football with their friends. Although it was rainy and muddy the girls tried their best.

In the first game we played Canterbury B and won! The girls played amazingly, always sticking to their players and getting the ball. They worked as a team and always encouraged each other, bringing a happy mood into the competition. This helped Donny bring home the first win. All the girls were rotated in the field for everyone to get a chance at touching the ball. We were passing the ball to each other down the field, helping us kick all our goals. Our captains encouraged us and helped us with some tactics, everyone took in this feedback and played a lot better.

The girls had their first 15-minute break before going back on the field to play another game. The second game we versed Kew and brought home another victory. The girls played another great game, with great teamwork. By half time some of the girls were covered in mud and others were very cold. Although we were cold and muddy, we continued to play at our best.

We then had an hour lunch break before the semi-finale against Balwyn. Balwyn was a big team that looked very good but that did not stop us from trying our hardest. In the first half it was a close game, we were winning only by a few points. Balwyn came back harder than ever in the second half kicking the winning goal. We were not bad sports about it, we just shook their hands and said good game.

Due to this lockdown, the Eastern region Cross Country and Intermediate Boys Soccer matches had to be postponed, along with the Boys Netball. As soon as information becomes available I will share the new dates on Compass.

YEAR 8 BOYS AFL

Whether it's a win or a loss, our students continue to demonstrate a determined and courageous spirit.  That's the DSC way!

Last Thursday of the term, Doncaster Secondary College headed off to Bulleen park for the AFL mixed round robin day. On the day, there were 4 schools including us; Kew, Balwyn and Camberwell. That meant we were going to have to play 3 games. If we wanted to go to the next stage we would have to win all games, or you could win 2 games and rely on the other teams to lose 1 game.

Our first game was a highly contested game against Kew high school, but we won comfortably. The game was mainly controlled by Doncaster with high-pressure levels. We had heaps of the ball inside our attacking 50, we were winning the clearances, and we were getting heaps of drive from our half backs. There were many great moments in the game like when we took some great marks and kicked great goals. This win gave the boys heaps of confidence and belief that we could do well and go onto the next stage.

Then came our second game of the day which was against Camberwell high school. This game we had to swallow a very hard fought tough loss. The ball was mainly controlled by Camberwell throughout the game. They had more possession of the ball and it was mainly played in their offensive 50. The boys showed great spirit from Doncaster, we never dropped our heads and we kept going. On the day, Camberwell were just the better side.

The third and final game of the day was a comfortable win for Doncaster against Balwyn. The game was controlled by Doncaster pretty much the whole game, we got most of the centre clearances and majority of time with the ball inside 50. It almost seemed like every goal motivated the boys which made them keep building a bigger lead. The tempo seemed pretty chill from both teams compared to the first two games as the fatigue slowly set in. There we many great moments like some great mark inside the forward 50 or the runs off the centre bounce. Overall game 3 was a very calm game of footy that was dominated by Doncaster.

At the end of the day we had won 2-3 games. Which made it tough for us to go onto the next stage. Camberwell high school had won all 3 of their games which meant they had qualified to the next stage. Well done to the Doncaster boys for showing great spirit and never giving up. On behalf of the team we would like to thank MR. Shirley (the coach for the footy team) for a great day out and for giving us a chance to participate in this great event.

YEAR 8 BOYS SOCCER

Below are some reflections from our year 8’s on their recent sports days

On the 24th of June, the Year 8 Boys Inter-school Sport Soccer team geared up and hopped on the bus to go and play. There were to be three matches, and out of the 4 teams competing, the team with the most points would go through.

The first game started off really well, and we had gone 2-0 at half time. But after some unlucky goals and sloppy bits of play, the game ended 2-2. We held our heads high going into the second match, and good that we did so. We dominated the opposition, and won the game 9-0!

Now onto the final game. The other team were currently first, so we needed a win and only a win to go through. We didn't start off very well though, going down 2-0 early. But after a great strike, we were back in it, down 2-1. But with a few minutes to go, they buried our hopes and made it 3-1. Disappointed with the result, we packed up and got on the bus.

Although we didn't make it through, it was still lots of fun out in the sun.

I played in the year 8 soccer team. We first started our training with a game against the year 7s, and from that match, the team was created. We trained every day at recess and lunch. Sadly, the fourth lockdown hit just before the day we were supposed to head out for interschool. We were all very annoyed about it, but it did not stop us from just training at home.

When we came back, we continued our training for the next two weeks until the 24th of June where we left school to go to the soccer grounds. We were incredibly surprised by how many fields there were, and a bit worried about the conditions of each field since it had rained the night before.

In our first game, we played against Balwyn.  At the last minutes our fears became real, the terrain was so unpredictable that our keeper did not know where to catch the ball at. That goal made the match a draw 2-2. We waited and hour later for our next match against Camberwell and we won 8-0! Our next match was against Kew. We played a rough game, but at the end, Kew got us in the second half to score 3-1. We came second in the competition.

I’m really proud of how we played, and I hope next year we win and go onto division.
