Prep

English

Reading– During Term 3 in Reading, Prep students will be focusing on building their knowledge on making predictions about the characters feelings by using text clues such as pictures to assist with making a guess about what the character may be feeling and why they might be feeling this way. They will also continue to use their prior knowledge to discuss what they already know about a topic before reading a text.

Students will also undertake further learning around making connections to the story. These connections to the story will allow the students to comprehend what the story is about.

Writing– In Writing, students will continue their work on writing about an experience that has already happened and will utilise the elements of who, what, when and where.

They will begin a unit on narratives where students will have the opportunity to create stories with a beginning, middle and end with illustrations  and simple sentences.

Furthermore, students will continue to learn how to write an information report about a type of animal or community helper and will undertake a research process and learn how to record simple facts about a topic to inform and teach others about what they  have learnt.

Speaking & Listening–  In Speaking and  listening, Prep students will begin to learn how to  conduct oral presentations by speaking in front of their peers in a small group or partner situations. They will retell events and experiences with peers and known adults continually practising how to interact with others in various scenarios.

Mathematics

In Maths, prep students will be engaged in a unit of Addition and Subtraction which will involve students adding and subtracting groups to find the total. Students will continue working on number recognition and counting from zero to twenty. They will be identifying these numbers, counting forwards and backwards as well as matching these numbers to quantities.

Students will begin a new unit of Capacity, which involves comparing the amount something can hold. In addition, students will learn how to create data and interpret  the data.

Inquiry

Welcome back to Term 3! I hope everyone had a lovely and restful break. We have a very exciting Term of Inquiry ahead of us!

This Term in Inquiry we will be looking at History with a focus on Aboriginal Dreamtime. The key concepts covered this Term will be identify and culture. The key understandings we will address are sharing and reflecting on personal histories to reflect on who we are. Dreamtime stories help describe the creation and cultural history of the Aboriginal people. Through these understandings key questions will also be covered such as, what is my history/story and how do I know and, which Dreamtime stories describe the creation of land, animals, and people?

Using many different Inquiry skills and varying ways of organising our thinking we will research, wonder, question and present our understandings through a final assessment piece where the students will create a flipbook of their own personal history, including a family tree. I cannot wait to explore our histories with the Preps!

ART

The Preps are going to explore shape and form in Art this term. We will work with a range of materials, including paint, clay, pipe cleaners, chalk and fabric. In addition, we will explore ‘mixed media’, artworks that are created using a combination of different materials. Our creations will involve the use of skills such as tracing, beading, making clothes for dolls and pinch pottery. Spanish painter, Joan Miró, will inspire the development of our shape knowledge. Following this, the Preps will become familiar with the life and style of French-born Australian artist, Mirka Mora. Art activities will involve lots of discussion and play, as we discover creative possibilities in making large and small scale artworks. It has been wonderful to see the students’ confidence in the art room grow thus far, allowing their artistry and inventiveness to shine.

Music

Welcome to Term 3 Music! This term Grade Prep students will continue to consolidate their knowledge of rhythm and beat. Throughout this term, they will explore more deeply into the concept of notation. Students will practise developing their skills in reading stick notation that symbolises crotchets, quavers and crotchet rests. They will read these as ‘ta’ (crotchet beat), ‘ti ti’ (quavers) and ‘za’ (crotchet rest). Students will understand that music has silence which is symbolised as a rest in music.  As students further develop these skills, they will become more immersed in composition where they will write and play their own rhythms. The goal is that students will perform their own compositions with percussion instruments by working alongside their peers and demonstrating their own musical creations individually. Grade Preps will continue to be exposed to music such as nursery rhymes to understand rhythm and beat, including critiquing, by expressing their interest and likes of the various music genres they hear.

PE

Welcome to Term 3 Physical Education! This term students will continue to develop their ball handling skills by consolidating their abilities in throwing and catching. They will learn new skills such as leaping, dodging and striking. When leaping, students will work on running up to a jumping point, taking off from one foot and landing on the other. Students will learn to dodge by focusing their eyes in the direction they are moving to and move their bodies accordingly (left to right and right to left). Included in practising ball handling skills, students will work on striking by attempting to strike a ball using a forehand technique. They will also learn to keep their eyes focused throughout the strike. Students will continue to play games and do activities to support learning these skills. They will keep working with their peers in team activities and follow directions when completing obstacles courses and when following rules in a game.

Science

Welcome to Term 3! This term in Science we will be focusing on the Physical Science strand by investigating the fact that how objects move is dependent on a variety of different factors, including their size and shape.

This is an exciting unit where students will demonstrate different movements using their own bodies, blocks, balls, and many different objects and toys! Students will describe the shapes of objects and make predictions on how they will move according to their shape; students will then conduct experiments to test their predictions and observe movements.
