Myrniong - ELC to Yr6

Welcome to Semester Two

I trust all our Myrniong families had an enjoyable three-week break, whether it be interstate or a rejuvenating ‘staycation’ in the Western District.  Term Three is always a jam-packed ten weeks.  We look forward to Hoop Time for our Year 3/4s, the Year 6 Melbourne trip, House Music, ‘Books to Life’, parent/teacher interviews, Berry and Learmonth House Services, Year 2, 4 and 5 class Assemblies and much, much more.

In the holidays I had the pleasure of listening to an ABC Conversations podcast with mindset coach Ben Crowe. Ben works with Wimbledon Champion Ash Barty, the Richmond Football Club, surfer Stephanie Gilmore, the Australian Cricket Team and many other high performing athletes.  In the conversation with Sarah Kanowski, Ben made the following points;

  • Great athletes are not interested in winning - they strive for fulfilment and meaning.  Roger Federer’s goals are humility, gratitude and humour (nothing to do with tennis).
  • We each have flavours of distraction that prevent us from performing at our best.
  • Be open minded in sports.  Don’t overthink things.  Sport should be about competing, having fun and playing for enjoyment.  Getting back to child-like principles is important.
  • Great athletes can keep a calm state of mind.  Brain research suggests you can’t have opposites at the same time, for example being anxious and exhibiting calm.
  • Focusing on something you can’t control, like the outcome or expectation of others, and wanting to control it, is the definition of anxiety/stress/pressure or worry.  You can control your intentions and your mindset.
  • Your decisions, and not the conditions, need to determine your mindset.
  • Your greatest growth comes from the darkest times.
  • The power of dedication - performance dedicated to someone else leads to higher and deeper meaning.
  • The six most powerful words a coach or parent can say are - ‘I love to watch you play’.
