Middle Years

Welcome back to Term Three. I hope that all families have had a relaxing break and were able to recharge. Students have returned with enthusiasm, and it is good to have everyone back at school.

“By doing a little bit each day you can accomplish a lot”.

Reports have been released this week and it is important that these are read by students and parents. It is important to get back into the right routines, both in class and at home. Our MYPEC Mentor Team is working closely with students to reinforce good study habits and classroom routines. Homework routines are vital to success. Focusing on homework routines is important to students consolidate they things they have learnt during the day, to help them get organised for the next day, and give structure to their school world. We are trying to develop students who are autonomous and competent and persevere when faced with challenges.

Study Efficiently – work smart

Rule 1 – pay more attention.

Rule 2 – be more efficient.

These rule require students to:

  • Turn off your phones. Put phones away completely.
  • Control the noise, study in a quiet area.
  • Study alone and without interruptions.
  • Sit at a clean desk.
  • Study in short sharp sessions – 25 minutes, then have a short break and study for another 25 minutes.
  • Don’t multitask. Our brain needs to focus on one thing (eg: close tabs on your computer)
  • Be in a state of active learning.

Top Tips

  • Use your Record Book properly. Make sure you keep informed - be aware of assessment dates.
  • Have a simple filing system – clean out your folders.  Use manila folders to store class notes and handouts. Use your OneNote to help with revision. Throw out unwanted sheets that are no longer relevant to your learning.
  • Back up your work -  always back up important files to your own USB stick or the cloud.
  • Make a term plan – a summary of your commitments.
  • Write a weekly plan - allocate specific time for studying, sport, free time.
  • Get enough sleep, and have good bedtime routines. It important to be well rested and alert. Pack bags the night before. Turn off all devices at least one hour before bed.

Learning is the priority

Each holiday I read the students reports, and I was pleased with the overall progress of our Middle Years students. There are some students who need to work harder and more consistently this semester; they need to make sure they use their class time effectively and not get distracted. Successful students realise that learning takes effort and a great deal of time and practise. They realise that learning is the priority.

I encourage all parents to book into the Student/Parent/Teacher interviews on Wednesday 21 July, 4pm-8pm. This will give you and your child accurate and important information that will be beneficial this term.

VIBE Festival – Wednesday 21 July

We are looking forward to welcoming current Year 6 and new Year 6 students. Students are to wear their sports uniform on this day. Students will also need to wear facemasks when they are indoors. We are running a series of transition and challenging activities that will help students get to know one another and require cooperation and teamwork. We will provide food at recess and lunch. This is the start of the exciting Year 6 transition process.
