Prep News

It’s been a busy few weeks in Prep! Over the past two weeks we have been revising our phase 4 spelling letters and words. It is incredible to see the progress students are making applying this knowledge to their reading and writing. We hope that you are seeing some impressive work at home too.

Fairy tales have continued to be a huge theme in our learning. In reading, we have been learning to summarise Little Red Riding Hood. The students have loved acting out the characters and sequencing the beginning, middle and end.

In writing, we have begun the planning stages of our very own fairy tales. We have been busy creating and describing our main characters, designing a setting and starting to storyboard what will happen in the beginning, middle and end.

In Maths, we have explored mass and hefting. We wonder if you noticed any hefting at home? We have also been learning how to order and connect the days of the week.

In investigations, we have begun to explore different rules that we might have to follow at home and at school and why it is important to have these rules.

When asking the students what their highlights have been this fortnight they shared: reading with their grade 5 buddy, getting a fruit cup from the canteen, playing with their friends, hefting, acting out fairy tales, being an author, reading with a parent helper and of course science night!

Level 1/2 News

The level 1 and 2 students have had a lovely couple of weeks in science!

The level 2 students have been looking at chemical changes and how different solids, liquids and gasses combine to create a reaction. They used test tubes to combine dishwashing liquid, bicarb soda and vinegar. There were some bubbly, overflowing test tubes! They had a 'blast'!

In level 1, students observed a range of Australian Aboriginal artifacts to gain an understanding of the "first Scientists". They saw demonstrations of hunting tools like the boomerang and explored how they made natural clay ovens and gathering bush tucker. They learnt how local materials were used to create tools, vessels and even super glue! Soon students will experiment with making paint from rocks, based on the Aboriginal tradition of using ochre.

Level 3/4 News

6 weeks of Term 3 have already flown by! It has been a very busy week mid way through the term.

On Tuesday the 16th of August level 3/4 students participated in the African Drumming performance. They did a great job and loved it.

On Thursday the 18th of August we held a whole school Science Night. It was amazing to see over 200 people exploring through the school and engaging in a range of science activities. The level 3/4 science focus was chemical science and we had Oobleck and Sherbet making in our area. Our room was full of excitement! Thankyou all for coming.

In Reading, students have continued looking at different types of poetry.  They are working on understanding that the purpose of poetry is to engage and excite the imagination of the reader, or to stir an emotional response within them. Students started their reading learning task which involved them reading a poem and then analysing it.

In Writing students have been looking at different types of poetry and have started exploring figurative language such as idioms, similies, metaphors, hyperboles and personification. Students painted beautiful pictures of blossom trees and wrote their own Haiku poem.

The last two weeks in Maths students we have continued looking at the topic of Chance. We have now started exploring 3D Shapes and students had a go at using matchsticks and playdough to construct their own 3D shape.

In Inquiry, students have been introduced to their inquiry project which will involve them designing and creating their own assistive technology to help someone with a disability.

Level 5/6 News

In 5/6 we have continued to have some fantastic learning experiences.  We have continued our drumming with Kofi, learning about Solids, Liquids and Gases in Science, written some awesome poetry, designed some fantastic claw grabbers in Design tech, created some amazing plaster animals in art and preparing ourselves for Hoop Time in P.E.  We also had a visit from Hawks-for-all and had a go at wheelchair football.

In class, we have begun working on our Learning Tasks for Term 3.  For Reading, we have been reading 'Boy Overboard', learning about predicting and recounting key events and details.  For Maths, we are creating our own mini bingo game, demonstrating our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages.  And in writing, we have been creating our own free-choice poems.

We also had a 'Buddy Session', with our Prep buddies.  This was an exciting time where we read a story with our buddies, it was so much fun having this time to share our love of books.

Here are some samples of our amazing poetry.

Ode: The last story

Pen flow of freedom

Imagination gone wild, Ideas flow into me:

Decisions overwhelming,

I strife for a perfect story

At last, it is complete

No words could describe it,

Although not perfect,

 I was ecstatic,

Others were not.

The hated story,

it didn’t end well,

so, with a heavy heart

and pen in hand,

this one shall end well,

my very last stand.

Free Verse: Rain Forrest

Wow

Birds and butterflies fluttering above me

Big tall trees

A waterfall

Drip drip drip

Jaguars in the distance running

Gorillas up in the trees

Breath-taking

It looks like a story

Full of life

Baby fawns galloping together

Water flowing down the stream

Soft wet leaves

Drip drip drip

All the flowers have bloomed

An explosion of colour

Splendid

I never want to leave

Haiku: Storms

Lightning strikes the ground

Boom, crash lightning strikes loudly

lightning thunder fear or no fear

Free Verse: Silence.

Everything is still.

Suddenly.

Sirens start to blare.

Something falls from the sky.

People run and scream.

Looking for cover.

BOOM!

Off goes a devastating bomb.

Destroying everything in its path.

Armies charge.

Weapons firing.

Pain, destruction, death.

Nothing is left.

This is true silence.

Silence

Silence.

Colour Poem: Red

Red as the dawning sun illuminates the sky,

The taste of cherries lingers in my mouth.

Lighting the flaming fire,

Glass of wine the colour of vermillion.

Ruby red roses left on the doorstep, the smell of blooming flowers stay.

Watching as trucks leave with trays of copper and rust.

Sewing a scarlet red dress fit for only the best,

A prick of a finger,

Drip,

Drip,

 Drip.

Crimson red covers my workspace, blood follows and covers every touch,

Waiting patiently for it to stop…
