Year 3

The grade 3 team love to spill the tea on what's going on in our cohort, read below to find out the juicy information of what our glorious students are doing at school.

Maths:

As the term is coming to an end, students have created a survey question and collected data. They are now turning that data into different representations which they will read and interpret from. Students have been exploring chance where they have been using vocabulary such as impossible, possible, likely, unlikely and even chance to describe the outcome of an event. In measurement, students have been exploring Mass and been practicing how to read scales using formal units such as kilograms and grams. You can help our mathematicians by asking them what the outcome is for the weather today, or the chances of getting heads or tails on a coin. They can also practice by reading kitchen scales and hefting different objects to see what is heavier or lighter.

Writing:

Writing has been linked to Humanities recently. Students have enjoyed researching an endangered species and creating an information text to teach the reader about the animal, their appearance, diet, behaviour and threats. Throughout this unit students have understood what a heading and subheading are and how we put information that we research into our own words.

Jaya – 3C

Reading:

Students have learnt a lot about synthesising, it works to improve their independent reading and ability to create more complex sentences.

There's three steps that students follow to complete their reading synthesising tasks, this includes sharing and recording their prior knowledge in regards to a topic, which they then go and research further to complete their new knowledge and then they make connections between both prior and new knowledge which they will then go and use to create sentences.

Year 4

As Term 2 comes to an end the Year 4 students would like to celebrate by sharing some of their highlights and memories.

Writing:

After completing our unit on Narratives and writing about make believe stories we began researching and planning our non -fiction writing. We were able to choose an animal and research some interesting information. It is quite unbelievable how many animals are endangered or threatened mostly due to losing their habitats. We were able to discuss these topics in the class and had a lot of fun sharing our research with our peers.

We have also been lucky enough to have pen pals this year from all over Australia. We really enjoy writing our letters and making envelopes.

Maths:

We have learnt a lot about shapes this term, not just the regular shapes but also the irregular shapes. We even learnt some new words like polygon, symmetry, and parallel lines. We were able to make new shapes by joining shapes together, these are called composite shapes.

We also learnt more about multiplication and division. This was fun because we got to explore and use different strategies to help us solve mathematical problems.

Humanities and Science:

A highlight this term was the adventures we had traveling to the city to the Melbourne Museum. We had so much fun exploring the different exhibitions. One of our favourites were the dinosaurs, but the Bugs Alive and mini buildings were great too. We also learnt a lot about volcanoes and the changing earth while we watched an informative film.

Year 6

Year 6 Canberra Camp

This year the year 6’s went on an 8-hour trip to Canberra. When we arrived at Canberra we settled into our cabins and got ready for the night. We started early at 6:00am in the morning. While we were in Canberra we did lots of different things such as The Australian Institute of Sport, the High court, Parliament House, Questacon, The National Museum, War Memorial, mini golf and more.

The Australian Institute of Sport

When we arrived at the Australian Institute of Sport the whole group where excited to see the whole place. Sadly, we could not look around the entire museum, but we did get to the game area where you were allowed to touch everything. Students and teachers were versing each other in basketball, skiing, and lots of other activities. We had a lot of fun!

The High court

The High court it was like an airport, with tight security and lots of staff, we had to do a metal detector. Inside we sat down in court room that hears constitutional cases. We listened to a couple of cases, one about a dog and one about tobacco and the packaging.

Royal Australian Mint

We went to the Royal Australian Mint, which was cool. We got to see how coins were made and learnt about old coins, they were interesting. Some had holes in them, and some were covered in dirt and rock which had fallen off ships and landed on Australia before the first fleet! We spent ages at this window watching the factory, there were three robots which all had different jobs, Titian, Penny and Robbie. Titian lifted the coins into the machine to be prepared. Titian looked like a big arm. Penny brought Titian the big barrels of coins even though she was small she was 2x stronger than Titian. And finally, Robbie, Robbie is kind of forgotten he just sits in the back and checks the coins to make sure they’re correct.

Parliament House

When we arrived at Parliament House, we were all shocked. It was big and fancy and we had never seen anything like this before. We got a tour we got to look at 2 different areas, The House of Representatives and the Senate. These rooms were decorated in the colors red and green, which have been turned down to look more Australian even though there based of The British Parliament. We walked around and as we walked there were a lot of clocks everywhere! And at the end we enjoyed some yummy fro-yo.

In total Canberra was amazing, it was fun visiting all these fabulous places. And there were many more, Canberra was so interesting we were never bored or got any time to rest.
