PREP

In Prep we have been learning about team work, using manners and taking turns. Students have been practicing their teamwork skills through play. Preps have been working together to build big block buildings and putting together puzzles. They have also practiced using their manners to share  pencils and taking turns when playing board games together.

As we get to the end of the semester, students are becoming more confident with their letter sounds, reading words and sentences. Students have really enjoyed reading groups and have loved engaging with their peers as they build on their reading skills.

As we come to the end of term we celebrate all of the hard work students have put into the first semester of the year. Preps performed their drama song and dance that they have worked so hard on to learn and we celebrated the end of our rhyme unit as well as end of term with the Lorax movie!

We hope that everyone has a safe and well deserved break and look forward to lots more amazing learning in the term to come.

The Prep Team

Year 1

Last week the year ones went to Sovereign Hill  because we have been  learning about the past.

We saw many olden days things, including a horse and carriage and old buildings.  We panned for gold in the creek.

We learnt how children used to dress in the olden days. Children only had two sets of clothes- their work wear and their Sunday best!

We also played games, such as marbles, Tic Tac Toe and made dolls out of old pegs.

The Year 1 Teachers

Year 2

It’s hard to believe that we are in our last week of Term 2 and Winter is truly here. As the days are cold and often unpredictable please continue to remember to send your child to school with their school jacket, jumper or windcheater and a school coloured beanie hat next term. Students will still be going outside on colder days and will need to wear these items outdoors. Please make sure your child’s name or surname is clearly labelled on each of these items.  Just a reminder that school jackets can’t be worn in the classroom but jumpers and windcheaters can be.  Please ensure your child continues to bring their water bottle each day so they can hydrate throughout the day.

Year 2 Curriculum Update

Reading: Students have been sharing their love for reading by selecting just right books and building up the time they read by reading independently for longer periods. Each student has their own reading goals that they have been focusing on and have enjoyed being a part of reading groups with their teacher.  Our reading focus continued to be on comprehension and reading fluently.

Writing: In writing we have continued to look at functional writing and the students have enjoyed writing cards, postcards and letters and have been looking at the features of each of types of these writing pieces. We have explored how to start firstly with the date, then the salutation (To Dear …. Or Hello…. How are you?) and the body of the letter and finally the closing of the letter (from and student’s name).  In our writing students have been exploring nouns including common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns and how to improve our written work using adjectives and how to identify them in a sentence. In our writing we have been editing our work by adding adjectives into our written work and focussing on the structure of a sentence, punctuation, capitalisation and spelling.

Our story book focus has been on the books Collecting Colours and Chooks in Dinner Suits. During our story book focus we discuss the vocabulary found in each of the books. Next, we discuss what happened in the book and explore beyond the book where students complete written tasks linking the book to their written work. Through storybooks students are exposed to language that they might to language not necessarily find in everyday conversations. You might like to have a discussion with your child about what they remember about these books.

Math’s: In Math’s the year 2’s we have been focusing on place value, addition and subtraction. We have been looking at worded problems and unpacked the language used in each problem to see whether it is an addition or subtraction problem. We have also introduced the symbols for addition and subtraction to understand their meaning.

Science: This term, students will be learning about materials and their properties.  Students are looking at the suitability of the properties of a material to make an object and what would happen if we made an object with the wrong material. Here is an example …..

Humanities

In health in play-based learning we have been exploring our community and how it has changed over time. It is hard for the students to imagine how Caroline Springs and Burnside used to be cattle grazing land to what is now a thriving township with shops, parks and a community. Furthermore, the Year 2’s have been exploring what community workers do for our community. Students have role played, drawn, painted and built experiences relating to community workers and our community.

Excursion to The Museum

Next term on Wednesday the 20th of July the Year 2’s will be going on an excursion to the Museum as part of our geography studies. Please go onto Compass to pay and give permission for your child to attend.

Thank you to those parents that attended our Open Morning Year 2 students enjoyed showing their family members around their classroom and sharing the activity about what the classrooms were like in the past and present. Thankyou to those families who attended our performance of Eddie the Penguin on Tuesday, it was a great success with an important message to reduce, recycle and reuse to help save the environment.

Please continue to check in on Seesaw to see your child’s work.  We look forward to seeing students after the school break on Monday the 11th of July.

Kind Regards……
