Victorian High-Ability Program

The program is a Victorian Government initiative that aims to provide an enriching, learning experience to challenge and extend selected high-ability students in English or Mathematics over a 10-week course. The course takes place over one term and is delivered in an on-line format for one lesson per week with students from other schools.  The course focuses on tasks that stimulate students’ critical thinking, problem solving and creativity – enriching their understanding of English and Mathematics. The program has been occurring for just over a year and these are some of the experiences of our previous participants:

During the VHAP program, I participated in English and Maths. We learnt by participating via Webex calls. During English, the template of our study was analysing a book named Hive and exploring its concepts thoroughly. In the Maths section, our group were able to ask what and how through the thinking of a mathematician. The program was incredibly valuable as it taught me how to think outside the box to interpret different questions. I would recommend this experience to anyone selected as it encourages you to develop strength in chosen subject, which would be helpful in several aspects of life and study.

I did the Math subject for the VHAP. The Math program was intriguing and challenging. It was different to what we did in the classroom. We did the program once a week and it was virtual. I found this program really valuable, we learnt about paradoxes, traversable graphs and finding pattern sequences.

Earlier this year, I was offered the opportunity to partake in a 10-week program known as VHAP. This was an online course for students for who excelled in Maths and/or English. In Term 1, I was welcomed to VHAP Maths (every Thursday), where I learned about a variety of Mathematical concepts and theories. I took part in this program alongside Yamen and 20 other students from across Victoria via Webex. I was taught the value of teamwork and independence, with each lesson becoming an worthwhile experience.

We would like to congratulate all our students who have been selected by the education department to take part in the program, especially for the maturity and self- discipline they have shown during their participation.
