Media Arts

FOUNDATION

Prep students are continuing to explore how Media can be used to educate as well as entertain. Students have made connections to their Literacy lessons for understanding how the television shows they watch can be fiction or non-fiction, just like the books they read at home and school.

Through watching Ask the Storybots, students have inquired into questions such as "Where does chocolate come from?", "What happens when you flush the toilet?" and "How do we catch a cold?".

Students make predictions before the episode, discuss the information they have learned mid-episode, and consolidate their knowledge in a whole class discussion at the conclusion.

YEAR ONE

Year One students are exploring how visualising is an integral part in creating media works. Students have made connections between the visualisation they perform in Literacy when writing or reading, and how this skill is scaffolded in Media to create works with images.

In particular, students have begun exploring how the way we tell stories has evolved over time, by examining Indigenous Dreamtime stories. Students viewed the story of the Rainbow Serpent and were shown the story being told via traditional dance, didgeridoo playing, picture storybook, and stage performance. Using their creativity and art skills, students completed colouring sheets of the Rainbow Serpent based on Indigenous designs.

YEAR TWO

In Year Two, students have continued their focus on advertising. Having designed toys they believed would appeal to children their age, students created logos to accompany their products.

Students used an online logo-making website to bring their ideas to life. They were creative, utilising multiple layers on an image, inserting symbols, editing colour and background, and using text.

Their final designs were saved onto their iPads for students to keep and share.

YEAR THREE

In Year Three, students have continued exploring how they can create a narrative using only still images.

In week three, students created storyboards for future photo shoots, based on the prompt, "Facing your fears in the playground". The students engaged their prior knowledge of photographic techniques from Term Three to include a range of shot types and angles to help tell their story. Using these storyboards as a plan, they will follow the literacy process of drafting, taking their shots, revising and editing, before publishing their final pieces.

YEAR FOUR

Our Year Four students have started a new unit, analysing media works to develop their understanding of narrative techniques. Using the all-Indigenous produced TV show Thalu as a mentor text, the students have examined character traits of the protagonists and supporting characters, as well as what a conflict is in a narrative and how it propels a narrative forward.

Throughout these lessons, connections are made to the students' own writing pieces and how in Media and writing the same narrative principles are followed.
