FOUNDATION

Students in Foundation have made a great start to the term beginning with a reflection of their prior learning in the Elements, Line and Shape. They looked at the different forms that line takes and two categories of Shape. After watching a short video on the element Line; they began writing the word ‘Line’ in the middle of their Visual Art Diaries and drew different types of lines around this word. Students showed they were Risk Takers drawing their lines and focusing on spacing lines evenly, within segments.

YEAR 1 & 2

In years One and Two students were introduced to some art forms used by book Illustrators. They were shown various example illustrations and discussed the materials and processes used by these artists. Students showed good Communication skills, practising good listening while the lesson was delivered during instruction time. Three forms of illustrations were discussed, included Collage, Technical pen drawings and Watercolour Illustrations.

Students then used their prior knowledge on materials they had learned about, connecting with Watercolours. They experimented with watercolours using a new technique taught called ‘Wet on wet’. In this technique a first application of watercolour paint is applied, and then a second layer is applied on top of the ‘still-wet’ layer. Students enjoyed exploringand evaluating the outcomes of their experimental learning and were confident to transfer these new techniques in their next unit.

YEAR 3

In Year 3 students have now completed their printed Self-portraits and used a reflection sheet, to prompt them on the main areas that were covered in the unit over Term 3. As a collective they showed they were good Communicators by listening to and discussing the work of others, while they presented their individualised learning.

Students included terms such as Collage and the use of new equipment such as rollers. They also mentioned that they used new materials such as foam and tracing paper to prepare their Self-portraits.

Students were also introduced to a new art project using wooden cogs and gears to create their own mechanical mini beasts. At this stage students began to sketch down some ideas for their  creatures, inspired by the work of Lance Balchin’s book, ‘Mechanica'. The book is a guide to the fantasy world of Mechanica creatures, with amazing and beautiful steampunk-inspired illustrations.
