Year Six News

Dear Year Six Families,

This term seems to be flying by with the students counting down the days until graduation. This fortnight we have been delving deeper into our 'How We Express Ourselves' unit with the students using their critical thinking skills to form arguments on a range of topics involving the use of social media.

Unit of Inquiry

In Week Three, students were involved in a 'Police in Schools' incursion, in which they learnt about digital safety and the risks that are associated with the misuse of social media. Students were inquirers throughout the incursion, asking the police questions to further their understandings of the impact their choices online may have.

The students have been engaged in multiple discussions regarding 'misrepresentation' online. They have looked at how we might misrepresent ourselves, how companies may misrepresent people and products, and how this may affect our perception of the world.

Writing

Students began looking at the persuasive techniques of 'Ethos', 'Pathos' and 'Logos' and how these are used in persuasive writing to convince a reader of an argument. Students were able to identify these in texts and explain why the author makes choices to use these techniques.

We linked our understandings of misrepresentation to create a new persuasive blog, students were able to form their own arguments, such as 'advertisements should have a disclaimer to state whether they have edited a photo' and 'Editing apps, such as Facetune should be banned'.

Numeracy

This fortnight we wrapped up our 'Chance' unit and the teachers were extremely proud of how much growth students were able to make from their pre assessment to their post in just 3 short weeks.

Over the next four weeks our focus will be on 'Geometric Reasoning', we have placed students into a flexible learning group and we will be teaching concepts such as 'estimating, measuring and comparing angles' and 'investigating angles on a straight line'. We cannot wait to see the growth they make at the end of this unit too!

Women of Wyndham

On Thursday 20th October, some of our Year Six girls attended 'The Multicultural Women Empowerment Conference' at Parliament House. During our Year 6 Exhibition Ansharah, Neveah, Keyshia, Mc Kenzie and Zenia reached out to the Women of Wyndham and donated money they raised by making and selling scrunchies. This was a proud moment for Saltwater College as these students were able to speak so eloquently and listen enthusiastically to the guests when they discussed being empowered women. They also stepped out of their comfort zone and participated in a 'Ramp Walk for a Cause' as they were asked impromptu questions and had to answer in front of a panel. A big congratulations to these girls, who represented themselves and our school with pride.

End of Year Carols

This year our Christmas Carols will be sung in our timetable groups with TTA singing 'Feliz Navidad' and TTB singing 'Like It's Christmas'. This week, students will begin practicing and learning their song and dance, and we are sure they would love to show you and practice at home too! Carols will be held at the school on Wednesday 14th December, mark it in your calendars.

Year 6 Graduation

Our Year 6 Graduation is confirmed for Thursday 8th December. We will be sending out invites with more details soon which will highlight times and the venue so keep an eye out!
