Hockey Coaches Galore! 

Nick Tremayne and Co. 

Nick Tremayne (SVC 1996-99), pictured above, is back as senior men’s coach of the Derwent  Hockey Club having previously coached the side to a premiership in 2013. 

He replaces Nathan Fitzpatrick (SVC 1998-2001) who coached the team from 2019 – 2021 – and won premierships in the first and third years of his tenure. Nathan, now married and with two young daughters, studied Physical Education at UTas and is currently Deputy Principal at Margate Primary School.

 

After 9 rounds of this year’s senior men’s roster, Nick’s team is sitting on top of the ladder.

 

Nick played A Grade with Derwent from 1998-2016, was its Captain for 11 years during which time it won 3 premierships. Also during this period, Nick won consecutive Southern Hockey Best & Fairest awards, Captained the Tassie Tigers for three years and was a member of the Australian Under 21 squad (2002-03) and toured Europe with the Australian Institute of Sport squad in 2007.

 

Nick, who works with Strategic Financial, holds a Bachelor of Economics via the University of Tasmania and an Advanced Diploma in Financial Services. He is married to Amy and they have two children - Finn and Milla.

 

Also on the hockey scene – Tom Beard (SVC 1999-2005), is the current coach of the Canterbury senior women’s hockey team. Tom excelled in athletics, cross country and hockey whilst at the College.  After several years in Western Australia, during which time he was the Head Coach of the Curtin University senior hockey team,  he returned to Tasmania at the beginning of 2021 to take up a teaching post at the St Virgil’s College Junior Campus.

 

Added to the above, Steve McMullen (SVC 1985-90) is the coach of the Tassie Tigers Men’s Team that competes in the National competition.
