What's happening in the classrooms?

As of Monday 18th October, the Junior School has begun its staggered return to school. Students and teachers alike are delighted to return to classroom learning. It has been a delight to see students reconnecting with their friends, sharing stories and settling back so well into our school routine. A huge thank you goes out to all students, families and communities for their continued support during this transition period.

We have begun each morning with outside play and a chance for students to socialise with their peers. Students have then been focussing heavily on Literacy and Numeracy alongside their Social and Emotional Learning (SEL). The Prep/1 students have been participating in individual, partner and group work as they continue their literacy rotation activities. We have been learning all about the CK digraph whilst revising all of our letters and sounds. Students have continued to work in focus groups with the teacher, practising their reading and writing.

In Numeracy, the Prep/1 students have been continuing to learn about Addition and Subtraction. We have learnt to split large numbers into Tens and Ones to help us add them together. The students used objects, such as single straws and straws grouped into bundles of ten to represent numbers. We then learnt about subtraction, or finding the difference, by representing subtraction problems with toy frogs and lilypads.

During our remote learning period, the Prep/1 students learnt about Money. We discussed the history behind each coin, including the meaning of its engraving. The students learnt the difference between dollars and cents and how to identify and order Australian coins.

In Religious Education and Inquiry, the students are learning about Stewardship of Creation. The Prep/1s have been exhibiting curiosity as they have questioned many things about our natural resources and how we can care for our planet. We explored the Creation Story in Genesis and the letter Laudato si’ from Pope Francis. Students have been writing sentences about how we can care for our Earth. I wonder where our investigations will lead next?
