Learning and Teaching

Home Reading

With the return to onsite learning, your child will start bringing home reading material from school. Would you please ensure that they carry books to and from school in their blue reading bag? Each child has a reading diary to record the books they read. Reading bags will be brought back to school each week so that classroom teachers can keep track of books read and children can change books when needed.

We encourage you to support the school and teachers in-home reading procedures by reading any correspondence from the classroom teacher, communicating any necessary information to the teacher in the diary and signing the diary each time your child reads at home.

There are three stages that you can work through when reading with your child:

Stage 1: Before Reading

Introduce the book through discussion. Look at the front cover and the illustrations in the book and ask your child to make predictions about the characters, setting and plot.

Stage 2: During Reading

Please support your child as they attempt to read the text independently. Ask them to sound out words they are unsure of and to blend the sounds together.

Stage 3: After Reading

Discuss the characters in the book and what happened. Talk about your favourite parts of the story or think about other books that were similar.

You cannot underestimate your role as an advocate for your child's reading success. Your interest in reading can have a massive impact on your child's attitude towards the joy of reading.

Thank you for your continued support,
