Year Five News

Written by the Year Five Team

WELCOME BACK!

We did it, team! Another, and hopefully last ever, lockdown done and dusted. While it wasn’t always easy, the Year Five teachers have been blown away by the commitment and dedication put in by students and families these last few months. We hope you are able to look back on this time and appreciate all of the things we were able to achieve in trying circumstances. We had camps and quizzes, cooking classes and discos, WebEx and on-site, and through it, all our students have been giving it their all.

It is important for us that as we close this chapter, we say thank you for all the hours and effort put in across the board. It takes a collaborative effort during times like these, from the teachers and school, to the families and, most importantly, the students themselves. Congratulations, everyone. Now, let’s finish the year in style!

Collaborative Learning

A return on-site provided us an opportunity to work together again in shared educational experiences. In Literacy, students explored writing poetry using the five senses. By switching our classrooms to an outdoor setting, we were able to embrace and visualise the world around us and put it onto the page. In Maths, students utilised their knowledge of angles to create, classify and estimate angles using meter-long rulers and chalk in the schoolyard.

Book Week

An important part of our celebration of literacy each year is Book Week. While initially planned for earlier in the year, Saltwater College will be holding our festivities during weeks six and seven of Term Four. This will include a dress-up day on Friday 12th November.

Students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character. Week seven will also see classes develop an innovation on a familiar text. Text innovation takes a text and allows students to change characters, settings, and story elements to make a personalised version of the story. These pieces will be collected and published as class texts, with online versions being made available for families.

Christmas Carols

Following the updated advice from the Victorian Government, classes will be able to make preparations for the singing of our class Christmas Carols later in the term. Each Year Five class has selected a song which they will perform in the dance studio, complete with choreography. Our Year Five classes have taken pride in their performances and will be working hard to collectively push each other to put on the best show possible.
