Year Three News

Written by the Year Three Team

The Year Three teachers are so excited to have students finally back onsite! It has truly shown how resilient these students are from their commitment throughout Remote Learning. Hopefully, now we can spend the final few weeks of Year Three together celebrating these amazing achievements.

We asked students to complete a passion project as the final wellbeing Friday activity and Zainah from 3E did a fantastic job researching her passion, Pianos. Check out her passion project down below!

Reading

In Reading, the Year three students have been investigating non-fiction texts as they prepare for their new unit on information texts. They have been revising the comprehension strategy of summarising, taking out key information from a text. Upon their return to school, students will be continuing to look at non-fiction texts as well as doing many Reader’s Theatres to work on their fluency and expression.

Writing

Following the completion of this unit, students will be spending time practising the various styles of writing they have explored over the year before starting their new unit of writing on information reports. This enables students to revisit and revise concepts they have covered in persuasive writing, explanation texts, narratives and poetry.

Maths

In Maths, students have been continuing to explore concepts of Capacity under the unit on Measurement. The Year Three students have been using materials available at home and school to measure and investigate capacities of various objects using the units of measurements - litres and millilitres. Students have been continuing to develop their knowledge of units of measurement and capacity by ordering objects from smallest capacity to largest. They have been developing their understanding of how different shaped objects can still have the same capacity. By providing practical experience to students, they have been able identify the various factors that can influence the capacity of their objects such as spilling water as they measure.

Inquiry

As part of the Unit of Inquiry under the Transdisciplinary Theme ‘How the World Works’ with the Central Idea ‘Forces effect the movement of objects’ students have been exploring the operation of various simple machines. Students have been inquirers and covered simple machines such as the lever, pulley, wedge, screw, inclined planes and wheel and axles. By developing an understanding of the use of these machines in our lives, the Year Three students have been able to recognise how important these machines are and how they make work easier for us.
