Prep News

Written by the Prep Team

Congratulations to the Prep students for such a smooth transition back to on-site learning! They have shown so much resilience in their first year of school and it is great to see their smiling faces back in the classroom. During the first week back, students attended mini assemblies, where they were awarded a special award for their efforts during remote learning.

In Reading, students explored the mentor text, ‘Memoirs of a Goldfish’ by Devin Scillian and made text-to-self connections by sharing the events that took place in their first week back at school. Students also revised the features and purpose of non-fiction texts and revisited the ‘good reader strategies’.

In Writing, students built upon their knowledge of memories and discussed how memories can relate to journeys. We continued exploring the mentor text, ‘Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge’ by Mem Fox and focused on looking at the beautiful illustrations. Students then created their own artwork that depicted their understanding of the word 'journey'. Students went on a walk around the school to observe what changes had taken place since they were last on site, especially with the construction of the school’s newly built high school building. They then wrote about the journey of Saltwater P-9 College.

In Maths, students began inquiring into the Measurement and Geometry concept of capacity. Students had fun completing lessons outside by pouring water into different sized containers and comparing the capacity of each container by using the language, ‘more, ‘less’ or ‘equal’.  Students also continued exploring the Number and Algebra concept of subtraction. They created their own problems using hands on materials like, unifix and teddies to solve their problem.
