Commitment

When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this: you haven’t.

Thomas Edison

As we reach the middle of Term Two the reality of having to work hard to achieve results sets in, it's time to focus on one of our school values: commitment. At assembly we heard from our Head Girl, Chloe Trend about commitment and I added a few thoughts of my own:

When I was growing up my Dad always said to me, ‘if you can conceive it, you can achieve it’ He meant that if I could just see myself doing something, I would be able to do it.  I would just have to commit myself and then it would happen. This is really good advice and seems very encouraging.  But, what I found out as I got older is that advice is that easy, and that hard. Did my Dad know that when I was singing into my hairbrush and recording myself on my cassette recorder, I really could conceive of myself joining a band as a backup singer?  Did he know that as I made my brothers dress up in Sesame Street masks so we perform a show on rollerskates on our gigantically long driveway, I could conceive of a family act on Hey Hey, It’s Saturday – a TV show popular at the time?

What I found out as I got older is that I have to be realistic about what I commit myself to.  I need to weigh up my gifts and talents (or lack thereof), what I can fit into my life, where my priorities lie and then commit. It’s that old bit of advice about ‘if you’re going to do something, do it properly’  For all of you, this would be my advice about committing yourself to something. Commit properly.

Healthy Eating Policy

We want our children to make healthy choices with food to support a healthy lifestyle.  We have recently updated our Healthy Eating policy which includes the following points:

  • Children bring a water bottle and some fresh fruit or vegetables to snack on in. Water is a preferred option to juice or soft drink.
  • Our ‘nut aware’ strategy recognises it is not possible to completely remove allergic triggers from the school. We aim to implement age appropriate and practical strategies to reduce the risk of inadvertent exposure to allergens. Please avoid sending the following foods to school:
    • peanuts or tree nuts;
    • nut spreads such as peanut butter, Nutella, hazelnut spreads, cashew butters or similar
    • products containing nuts in their ingredient lists, such as satay sauce, nougat, muesli bars, cakes and biscuits;
    • food cooked in nut oils such as peanut oil.
  • The school canteen provides healthy and nutritious recess snacks and school lunches that support our Healthy Eating policy.
  • We encourage children to have ‘litter free’ lunches and parents are encouraged to support this endeavour with the following suggestions:
    • use refillable water bottles,
    • avoid plastic wrap and aluminium foil,
    • buy foods in bulk and divide snack quantities using reusable containers.

Thank you for your support with encouraging our children to make healthy choices
