Interschool Cross Country

This week Great Southern Grammar hosted the Interschool Cross Country.  Congratulations to the 36 GSG students who were selected to compete for GSG.  The School finished a creditable third behind North Albany Senior High School and Albany Senior High School. Thank you to Mr Symonds and the team of assistants.

‘Our lived education’

An increasing concern of education has been the notion that schools are just ‘ATAR or VET’ factories, churning out students with the necessary ticket to get into a tertiary institution.  At GSG, we are grounded in ‘living’ our education from day to day. At school, we should not just tick the box, fill the bucket or reach the grade. We should be living our lives at school, and beyond, with genuine commitment to each other and our community. The theme of commitment was part of our assembly this week where students spoke of the importance of how education is an experience lived, not just a ticket to somewhere else.

World's Greatest Shave

Five of our very brave students are taking part in the World's Greatest Shave this Friday during lunch time. Students will have an opportunity to support this very worthy cause with a gold coin donation, wearing an accessory (eg: socks, t-shirt, ribbon) in blue or orange, buying a sausage in a bun and watching the girls cut or shave their hair.  Please support this worthy cause.

Here are the students' fundraising links if you would like to make a donation towards their efforts:

Kingfisher Fair

Planning is underway for the biennial Kingfisher Fair, to be held on Sunday 12 September 2021.  At this week's P&F meeting, under the direction of President Mr Jim Darmody and staff member Mrs Julia Bairstow, the P&F Committee discussed the format and delegation of responsibilities for this year’s event.  It is the intention that families will be approached to participate and become involved in this community event.  In the coming weeks further details will be provided with regards to sponsors, allocation of stalls and the involvement required to make this event a success.

For those families new to the School, the Kingfisher Fair is an offshoot of the Kingfisher Creative Arts Festival.  Both of these events have become an important and fun part of the tradition of our school.

The Kingfisher Creative Arts Festival started as a community service project initiative in 2001 to raise money for the Albany Women’s Refuge Centre.  The Festival promoted school spirit through students being involved in a range of competitions and activities in the numerous branches of the arts.  It was created and organised by staff member Mrs Kathy Fenwick.  It was a huge success, but due to the school’s growth, it was impossible to continue to successfully combine the Festival’s two areas - creative arts activities and fun activities aimed at raising money - every year. In 2005 it was decided to hold the Festival biennially.

The P&F expressed a desire to hold a School Fair and hence the first Kingfisher Fair was created in 2005.  It continued in the tradition of bringing the whole school together, as well as inviting the wider Albany community to share in the fun and games associated with a Fair
