New Careers Practitioner

A big hello to the Northcote High School community from your new Careers Practitioner, as of June 11th, Karen (Booma) Burgess.  Yes, I have a strange nickname! It’s the name that has stuck, so I’m happy to be called either Booma or Karen.

The past few weeks have been challenging ones for the careers program.  Kylie Witt has commenced an exciting twelve month secondment to the VCAA, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the NHS community in covering her role.  We haven’t had the ideal change-over overlap, but Kylie has been incredibly generous in assisting me with my start here and I am ready to try filling her ‘big shoes’.  I am already really impressed with the team here, and in awe of all the opportunities available to NHS students.

As we head towards the end of term, the focus of careers starts turning to building knowledge to plan for 2020!  Students should be ensuring that they take on any opportunity they can to gather information to assist with future decision making.  This should include getting to classes and sessions which explore careers, attending tertiary open days, talking to others about subjects/courses/careers and developing a real understanding of yourself – what you enjoy, what you are good at and how you think you might wish to move forward on your pathway.  Being well informed is crucial to successful planning!

For Year 12 students; Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) will open applications for tertiary study in early August.  Stay tuned for further information regarding how this process works, and what students will need to do to apply for tertiary Courses/SEAS/Scholarships.  In the meantime, students could certainly be thinking about course options, and proactively investigating these and planning visits to university open days.

Thank you for your patience over recent weeks, and please bear with me as I adjust and learn the inner workings of NHS.

2019 open days available on VTAC website

2019 dates for open days are now available on the VTAC website.

Note: the open days listing is current as at the print deadline for the Guide. Any updates are available via institutions’ websites.

La Trobe Aspire program

Applications are now open for La Trobe University's Aspire program. Aspire is an initiative for undergraduate school leavers and non-Year 12 students. If you’re in Year 12, you’ll also be invited to be part of an exciting enrichment program designed to give you a head start with your university studies.
