RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS    (Maureen McDonald - RE Leader)

NANO NAGLE

In 1718 Nano Nagle was born and on 26th April 1784, Nano Nagle died.

Nano Nagle established the Presentation order in Cork, Ireland. The particular mission of the Presentation Sisters was the education of girls and it was with this knowledge that Father James Corbett of East St. Kilda wrote to Ireland, asking the first Presentation Sisters to come to Melbourne.  The sisters were needed to staff St. Mary’s school, alongside lay teachers, thus securing Catholic education for local children, many from poor Irish immigrant families.

In 1873 seven sisters responded to Father Corbett’s callmarking the foundation date of the first Victorian Presentation community. Shortly after, the Presentation Sisters began primary classes for girls and junior boys in St Mary’s Church, and girls’ secondary classes in the presbytery.

Tradition tells us that Nano Nagle carried a lantern as she moved through the darkness in the streets and lanes of Cork in search of children desiring education and the local poor in desperate need of food, comfort, medical attention and shelter.

The Lantern became a symbol of Nano’s love for the poor - a symbol of God's love, touching and transforming the harshness of their lives and offering hope.

Today that lantern has become the symbol of the mission of the Presentation Sisters around the world.

Mary Model of Discipleship and Model of Grace and Trust in God

During the month of May we honor Mary. Mary has a unique and privileged place in salvation history and in the Church. Because she responded yes to becoming the Mother of God, she is our first model of discipleship and our model of grace and trust in God.

The Insights of Pope Francis

Our pilgrimage of faith has been inseparably linked to Mary ever since Jesus, dying on the Cross, gave her to us as our Mother, saying: “Behold your Mother!” (John 19:27). These words serve as a testament, bequeathing to the world a Mother. From that moment on, the Mother of God also became our Mother! When the faith of the disciples was most tested by difficulties and uncertainties, Jesus entrusted them to Mary, who was the first to believe, and whose faith would never fail. Homily on the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, 1 January 2014

A Child’s Prayer

Dear Blessed Mother Mary,

help my mum to be a good mother.

Give her peace and wisdom,

strength and courage,

grace and happiness.

Be nearby when she needs help.

Keep her close to your Son, Jesus.

Help me to always show my mum

how very much I love her.

Amen.

Prayer for India and for our many families who have loved ones there.

Sovereign Lord, you are the hope and healer of your people and have promised a world where there is no more sickness or crying or death.

By your death and resurrection you have set your people free from the penalty of sin and death.

We pray your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Please prosper the work of those who are seeking a vaccine for the coronavirus, please strengthen those who are treating the sick, please comfort those who are mourning the loss of loved ones or living in fear of this disease.

Please give to governing authorities wisdom in their management of this crisis, and give to your people your peace beyond understanding, generous and wise hearts and a renewed trust in your sovereign goodness and glory.

Turn the hearts of many now experiencing fear and anxiety, that they may find the peace which is the fruit of the death and resurrection of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, in whose name we pray.

Lord of heaven and earth. Give wisdom to all those in authority in every land and especially for those who govern India.  We pray especially for President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government.

We pray for those who govern all the States and Union Territories and the districts within them. Give them all wisdom and wise counsel, that they may lead their communities to respond to this crisis with calm and generosity. Assist them to govern for the good of all.

Enable India’s leaders to properly resource and support all the necessary services in such a way that their communities maintain peace and safety.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

VISUAL ART & ITALIAN NEWS    (Caroline Egan & Carmel Vozzo)

This week in shared learnings of Italian and Visual Arts, some of our Year Two and Three

students created mixed media masks as an art response to their understanding of the Venice Carnival. This annual celebration coincides with the end of Lent, when elegant masks and costumes fill the streets of this wonderful city.

In our Year One shared learning of Italian and Visual Art this week, we continued to extend our  understanding of the

numbers 11-20 by working in pairs by playing the Italian game "Tombola". Tombola is a traditional game, which was first played in Naples. It is similar to bingo and has been played in Italy at Christmas time since the Eighteenth Century.

Our art response saw us creating two different varieties of pizzas , where we discussed our favourites and then  chose to add anywhere between 11 to 20 ingredients as toppings to our pizzas.

SPORTS NEWS   (Angela Mason)

The Year  5/6  Interschool Sport Competition finally began for 2021 on Friday 30th April. St Mary’s hosted three netball teams and a football team from St Joseph’s Elsternwick. It was a beautiful afternoon to be outside and exercising.

Netball

It was a really fun experience to play netball, as many of us had never played before.  There were captains appointed for each team to work out the positions and give everyone equal court time in different positions. When we weren’t on the court we were busy cheering for the other teams. We saw a lot of good sportsmanship from all players and we even made some new friends! Each team tried their best which resulted in some great passages of play and even some goals.  By Matilda (Team Red) & Nethmi- Caitlan (Team Blue)

Football

We played our first game on the St.Mary’s College oval, it felt massive! We really enjoyed stepping out of our comfort zone and trying a new sport. It was a great opportunity to meet new people and learn new skills. We worked as a team which resulted in getting us on the score board. Everyone tried their best and we were exhausted by the end of our match.  Due to our bye last Friday we were able to sharpen our kicking skills with Coach Roche, making us feel comfortable and confident going into our match on the 21st against St.Catherine’s, Moorabbin.
