Senior School Term Reflection

Winter Sports

This term, the senior students have been participating in Winter Sports every Friday. We all compete in one of the following sports: soccer, football, tee ball or netball. We played against a range of schools around our area including Good Shepherd, St Leonard's, Waverley Meadows Primary and more. Although we didn’t get as many victories as we had hoped, everyone tried their hardest and showed amazing sportsmanship.

Science Incursion

Reactive Chemistry Incursion

Theme Science - Chemical Sciences

On Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd of April the year 5 and 6 students participated in the hands of the science incursion called Reactive Chemistry - Chemical Sciences. We investigated states of matter and we learned about chemicals and how they behave when mixed. We had to think about what has taken place in each chemical reaction. We explored reversible and irreversible changes that occur when chemicals are mixed. We did 5 different activities. The first one we did was to observe reversible physical changes by mixing sodium polyacrylate with water turning it into a solid. The second activity we did was to mix different chemicals in a ziplock bag to observe the various signs of a chemical reaction. The third activity we did was to create two different reactions and compare the temperature between them. The fourth activity we did was using a rubber stopper with a tube to investigate the formation of a gas during a chemical reaction. The last activity we did was to use red cabbage extract as a pH indicator to test a variety of chemicals to determine whether they are acidic, neutral base. It was really fun to do and interesting to do various experiments. The year 5 and 6’s were having a lot of fun doing these experiments.

Remote Learning

Once again, on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer, our school transitioned back to remote learning at home. This time thankfully for just two short weeks. All our exceptional students showed how resilient they are and did such a great job working remotely from home.

Student Reflections

When I was in lockdown, I was doing online learning at home! I found it okay but struggled at times and would much rather be at school with everyone else. Online learning was sort of like last year when we were in lockdown for nearly a whole term! I think everyone missed their friends a lot during online learning. When everyone went back to school on Friday my teacher was very happy to see us all as well as my friends!

During this 2 week period of time the whole school had been staying in their homes during school hours. Students were given tasks to complete for the week through a Google Slides. The senior level have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages in numeracy. The Inquiry topic for this term in 5/6 were the states of matter. We conducted some experiments in our home and reflected on the results. For writing, we have been learning how to write an informative piece. During remote learning, we learnt how to structure an informative piece of writing. We have also been learning about social activists and comprehending videos about them. The students who finished early completed additional tasks for each subject. During remote learning we used a Google Slide, Gmail and Google Meets to communicate with teachers if students need any assistance. Overall it has been a great experience and we are definitely happy to be to seeing our friends and teachers at school.
