YEARS 9 TO 11 EXAM WEEK - JUNE 21 TO JUNE 25

Exam time is approaching for Years 9 to 11, so it is a good time to discuss exam preparation with your child. Students will soon receive information on how the exams will run and what the expectations are. As usual there will be a presentation to students in extended pastoral care the week before exams commence.

A permission letter has been sent to all parents/caregivers of Year 9 to 11 students which requires permission to be granted for students to leave school when they do not have exams. It is expected that students will be travelling straight home to study or making use of the supervised study rooms during the exam week.

Exams are an opportunity for students to get into the routine of regular study, as well as working on exam technique and study skills in preparation for sitting end of year exams in Year 12. We hope students make the most of the learning opportunity presented by exams and embrace the chance to hone their exam technique. It is also hoped students will become familiar and comfortable with the idea of end of unit exams.

Please see the letter for more details. Students can collect their QR code to sign out once the PAM permission has been granted online by parents/caregivers.

Good luck!

Director of Learning and Teaching

LEADERSHIP COMPETITION

YEAR 10 TO 12 GIRLS IN REGIONAL AND RURAL COMMUNITIES

Country to Canberra is launching its 2021 Leadership Competition. We are now in our eighth year of inspiring young rural women to reach their leadership potential.

The Competition

The 2021 Competition opens on June 4 and closes on July 23 at 11:59 pm.

Students simply need to submit a 400-600 word response or 3-4 minute video responding to our 2021 question:

COURAGE TO CHALLENGE: what is the role of rural women in driving change in their communities?

The Prize

An all-expenses-paid ‘Power Trip’ to Canberra and C2C On-Screen experience!

On the 'Power Trip', competition winners will meet politicians and leaders, tour Parliament House, and participate in leadership and public speaking workshops. They will have the opportunity to join our mentor program and will be published nationally! In past years, girls met with Julie Bishop, Tanya Plibersek, Larissa Waters, Jacqui Lambie, Malcolm Turnbull, and Prime Minister Scott Morrison.

Based on the success of last year’s inaugural C2C On-Screen program, we will be running the virtual two-day workshop once again for our 2021 winners. This will allow all of the winners to meet before their Power Trip in Canberra and get to know the other amazing young women they will be sharing this life-changing experience with.

Terms and conditions apply. See our website for more details.

COVID-19

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP

On May 10 and 11 students from the Introduction to Outdoor Education class embarked on their two Day Camp to Hattah National park. Students enjoyed an excellent camp which involved hiking with backpacks and carrying all of their own gear,  cooking their dinner on the Trangia camp stove, cooking marshmallows around the campfire, sleeping overnight in a tent and leading the group using their navigation skills of using a map and compass.

Students learnt a lot about the history of Hattah National Park, the flora and fauna that live there and the current refilling of the lakes. A very valuable, enjoyable and fun time was had by all students and staff.

VCAL TRIP TO MELBOURNE

On May 3 we went to Melbourne with our fellow Year 11 students to do homelessness workshops and other activities.

We left at 8:30am that Monday and arrived at 4:00pm checking in at the Atlantis Hotel on Spencer Street. After we had settled into our rooms, we went to Crown Plaza for food and watch the movie “Wrath of Man.” I found that the movie was very action packed but unsettling at the same time. Overall, it was still a good movie especially when we got free popcorn.

On Tuesday we got up early and had breakfast at 7:00am and went for a walk to the Intersection Empathy Workshop. It was an interesting experience for all of us. We had to use building blocks and be instructed whilst blindfolded. Then we moved onto the AMLC walk in the city which was very informative. We stopped for lunch and set off to do our painting workshop at Blender Studios which was fun especially when I made the stencil to spray paint with. Once all of that was done, we made a pit stop at the hotel to freshen up. We then had a good dinner at KingPin. We went bowling and did laser tag which was very competitive but fun.

On Wednesday we had a later start to the day, so breakfast was at 7:30am. Year 12’s went to the MCG to have an hour tour of the grounds. We got to play in the Game On session and went to the museum. Overall, the tour was fun and very educational about the MCG itself. Then we went shopping around the DFO and had lunch. After a quick change at the hotel, we went off to Bounce in Glen Iris. That was fun but very exhausting, we then walked to the Malvern Vale Hotel. The food was fantastic. Once dinner was over, we trained it back to the city and went to bed.

Our final day in the city was full of activities and everyone was exhausted. We had breakfast and headed off to The Big Issue Workshop. We got to hear about Peter’s Story and what he had been through and what he regrets which was inspirational. We then moved onto Cluedo at the Old Melbourne Gaol which was very fun but unsettling because it was a real prison. Went for lunch and did the amazing race.

After this we were all very sore walking more than 10kms just for the amazing race. We went to the Melbourne Star which was FANTASTIC. We had dinner at the Urban Alley Brewery and then ended the night with Ice Skating. It was so much fun. It didn't take much to get the hang of things. But we were all lapped by a group of primary school kids, that was funny. The highlight of ice skating was definitely the part where Kevin and Mrs Ellis were both struggling just a bit and needed the skating frames to move, but that is what makes the memories.

Friday morning, we left at 7:30am and went home because we were all over the city at that point as we all live in the country.
