Classroom Helper Training  - CANCELLED

Phonics in Context

The Prep to Year 2 classroom teachers had another session with David Hornsby in the Phonics in Context series last week. The focus was on analysing students’ writing to better understand their phonological knowledge and to identify teaching needs. We also learned more about using English orthography and morphology to help us understand spelling patterns...yes, it hurt our brains too! :)

We did have fun thinking of all the words with the base ‘ject’ (which we found out means to throw), including:

object - subjective - projection - reject - trajectory - injection

Can you think of any more? We are really looking forward to supporting students to conduct similar word inquiries into word families with the same base, such as the cook family or the build family. We are also lucky enough to have David Hornsby Zoom into one of our upcoming planning meetings. We will use his expertise to help us cater for the individual differences in our classroom to build a strong foundation for reading and writing.

Tips to support children at home

Just for something different, this week, I am providing you with a link to a video with tips to help your child with writing at home. The video is one in a series produced for parents in The Daily Cafe, a website that supports an approach to literacy called The Daily Five. The video discusses how it is important for students to experience success in writing, as well as in reading, at home, and offers some ideas on how to achieve this. I hope it’s useful to you!
