Celebration of Learning
Year 8 Science
Thank you to our wonderful Year 11 Hospitality and Food Technology students. Their motivation, attention to detail and great problem solving skills helped to make it a special day for the Graduating class of 2020. Catering for a large number during a pandemic certainly can be challenging. Nevertheless the girls worked as a great team with positive energy making it a great experience for all involved.
During Term 3, STEM experts of the future Year 8 Science explored robotics. Working in teams, their design brief was to build a robotic arm out of cardboard and then use it to pick up everyday items. The results were outstanding.
Year 9 Textiles Technology students have been immersing themselves in the culture of Japan by creating a mini-kimono to display their practical knowledge and skill. Each student has combined three decorative techniques in their item:- 1) Block Printing 2) Tie Dye/Shibori and 3) Hand Painting on fabric. These photos show a selection of items part way through their manufacturing process. Photos of their completed items will be included in the final 2020 newsletter.
Recently, our Year 9 Textiles Technology class engaged in a textiles activity focusing on a three dimensional aesthetic. Working in teams, they researched and constructed a completed headpiece/fascinator suitable for a special event. The students were given a single lesson for this challenge and were able to produce some very dynamic results.
Year 10 PDHPE completed road safety articles for their assessment task. Below is a few from the class.
Our warmest congratulations go to Jennifer Nguyen for best Body of Work in 2020 titled "Feast of the First Morning of the First Day".
Year 9 Elective Visual Arts constructed their own VANITAS - STILL LIFE and documented the arrangement through a series of drawing styles and mixed media. “VANITAS” medium: OIL PASTEL on Black paper
Mrs Di Rosario was thrilled to be visited by some students from her Hospitality 2019 class. Mele, Janelle and Luisa are all employed and using the skills they learnt while studying VET subjects at CGHS. Mele is continuing her studies in Hospitality at Kenvale College. She was our VET award winner last year and is part of the Kenvale College High Flyer program.
There are so many ways you could improve your problem-solving skills. I want to introduce you to RUFTS, which stands for Read the question, Understand the question, Filter the question (by collecting information from the question), Think about the correct formula/approach or use techniques/evidence from the text, Solve and Check or Write using PEEL, SETEEL, PETAL). Problem-solving and reading the situation are life skills that will help you to deal with complex situations in your life so please practise regularly and learn. In any challenging situation, your goal is to have a win-win outcome.
RUFTS will help our students with:
1) Deep learning: problem-solving, higher-order thinking and critical thinking skills
2) Literacy and Numeracy
RUFTS is a problem-solving tool that can be used in any subject area.
This group of students has been promoting RUFTS at DEAR for the last few weeks. Thank you, girls!
