Principal's Message

Welcome Back!

Prayer

Lord, as we prepare for the coming of a new semester, make us ready, attentive and available to hear you.

Thank You for the gift of being able to rise each day with the assurance that You walk through it with us.

Thank You for the gifts of creativity and uniqueness, and the energy to put them to good use.

May all that we are today, all that we try to do today, may all our encounters, reflections, even the frustrations and failings all be placed in your hands.

May the work we do and the way we do it, bring new hope, new life, and courage to all we come in contact with this semester.

We thank you, Lord.

Amen

Grandparents' Mass, Classroom Visits and Morning Tea

As mentioned last term, a Grandparents' Day has been scheduled for Wednesday 25 July, with a 9.00am Mass (Whole School Mass) and morning tea. All grandparents will be invited to visit their grandchildren's classrooms, straight after mass and before the morning tea, to view the wonderful work the children have completed.

Attached to this section is a flyer advertising the event as well as requesting numbers for catering purposes.

Performing Arts Festival

We are so fortunate to have so many talented students at OLA and a number of our students will be participating in the Annual Catholic Performing Arts Festival this term. I take this opportunity to wish all participants all the best as they represent OLA at various events scheduled during the term.

Please check the Term 3 calendar, on the school's website, for the scheduled events.

Because of Her, We Can! NAIDOC Week Celebrations

NAIDOC Week 2018 at OLA will be remembered as one of the most successful celebrations in recent years. The week commenced with the OLA staff meeting with a CEWA Consultant, to formulate the school’s new Aboriginal Education Map (AEM), NAIDOC Eucharist Mass with Fr Ken on Wednesday, boomerang displays created by the students and a special NAIDOC Assembly, where we were graced with Gina William’s presence, songs and stories.

This year’s theme ‘Because of Her, We Can!’ highlights, as pillars of our society, what Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women have played in the past and will in the future as active members of all communities. Following on from the above, and as As Fr Ken mentioned during his Homily on Wednesday, we also acknowledge and appreciate what all women have achieved as role models, mothers, grandmothers and members of our communities.

A huge thank you to our NAIDOC Committee members, Vanessa Knight, Sabrina Saraceni and Stephanie Figueira for coordinating the events this week.

Assistant Principal Appointment

On behalf of the OLA School Board, I would like to inform the community that the Assistant Principal appointment process has been completed. I take this opportunity to advise you all that Velma Erskine has been appointed as the substantive Assistant Principal at OLA. Velma has commenced in her substantive position last Monday, 16 July, 2018.

Congratulations Velma and I wish you every success at OLA.

Naming of Buildings

At a recent Board meeting and in consultation with the OLA Parish and Bishop Don Sproxton, the Parish Centre, including the Multi Purpose Hall, will now be known as the Fr. O'Mara Centre and the Shared Facility will be known as the Sr. Goretti Hall.

Fr. O'Mara was the founding Parish Priest of OLA who not only oversaw the construction of the new church, but also played a role in building the OLA School. Sr. Maria Goretti, a Dominican Sister, was the foundation principal at OLA.

Canteen Helpers Needed Urgently

A Message from Rosie Samuels (Canteen Manageress)

To keep prices to a minimum, volunteers are required to assist in the canteen. If the school was to employ a canteen assistant, prices would increase significantly and we don't want this to occur. We would like to keep the costs down to a minimum, hence assistance from the community is required. If you were to compare the OLA canteen prices to other schools, you will notice our prices are a lot cheaper.

A huge thank you to Julia and the other volunteers I can call upon to help out during our very busy canteen days. At this stage, the Term 3 helpers schedule has not been filled by parents and assistance is required urgently.

Below is the schedule for Term 3 and I would dearly love more people to assist on canteen days.  Please complete the attached PDF schedule email it directly to me at rosella.samuels@cewa.edu.au

Thank you

Rosie Samuels

Have a good weekend!
