EXCEL Sports Program

State Lacrosse State Championships

On Friday 26th August the Year 10 & 12 EXCEL Sport students were entered into the SSV Intermediate and Senior Lacrosse State Championships at Fawkner Park, South Yarra. We had 6 teams competing throughout a packed draw of continuous 12-minute games, with the top two teams in each pool playing off in the grand final. The Year 10 Boys Blue team finished second in their pool and played off against a very skillful lacrosse team from Williamstown High School. Unfortunately, the result didn’t go our way but finishing runners up in a strong draw is no mean feat. The Year 10 Girls Patterson River Blue Team were undefeated all day and played off in the Grand Final against Melbourne Girls College. After being down 1-3 early in the match, the girls managed to finish 3-3 at the end of the game. The decider went into a golden goal situation and after some quick hands in the ball up, Heidi Chalmers gathered and ran into goal and successfully shot and scored. This resulted in the Year 10 girls winning the State Lacrosse Title. An amazing achievement and thoroughly deserved. Thank you to Mr. Jack for his assistance throughout the day.

SSV Junior Lacrosse State Championships

On Friday 9th September the Year 8 EXCEL Sport class entered 2 boys’ and 2 girls’ team into the SSV Junior Lacrosse State Championships at Fawkner Park, South Yarra. After a three-week training block the students were well prepared for this event. At the end of the preliminary rounds, Patterson River Secondary had 3 out of the 4 teams play off in the Grand Final. Both the boys’ teams competed strongly throughout the day and finished top two culminating in a Patterson River only Grand Final. While the Patterson River Blue team took out the game with an 8-6 win against the Patterson River Red team, I am extremely proud of the growth and improvement from these 12 boys to eliminate all teams from the other respective schools. The Girls Patterson River Blue team played a hard-fought contest against Melbourne Girls College to finish as State Runners Up. A fantastic day for the students and the College. Thank you to Mrs. Ferguson for her assistance throughout the day.

Mauy Thai Boxing

The Year 9 EXCEL Sport students went to Beast Gym in Chelsea Heights for four weeks during Term 3. The students were taught Muay Thai boxing and kicking techniques, self-defence and overall fitness. The unit culminated in a sparring session where they were put through their paces and displayed the skills, they have learnt in a pressure environment. Thank you to Alex, Joel and Will at Beast Gym for passing on their knowledge and expertise.

Year 7 - 9 EXCEL Sport Train Like a Vixen Positive Netball Program

On Tuesday 6th September the Year 7 - 9 EXCEL Sport Program went to the State Netball Centre in Parkville as part of the Positive Netball Program. Train Like a Vixen is a full-day netball clinic, run by Netball Victoria qualified coaches. The students learnt specific technical skills and game sense activities, toured the high-performance facility, and met Ruby Barkmeyer, one of the Vixens players. It was a fantastic opportunity for the EXCEL Sport students to develop an understanding of what it takes to become an elite athlete. Thank you to Mrs. Bound and Mr. Leith for your assistance throughout the day.

Year 7 EXCEL Sport

The Year 7 EXCEL Sport students travelled to Frankston Hockey pitch on four Tuesday this term. They were coached by representatives of the Frankston Hockey Club where they learnt skills in ball control and game tactics. It was fantastic to see the students apply themselves so well to a difficult sport and produce some great plays in the small-sided games.
