Intermediate Girls State Soccer Finals

After winning the Greater Western finals back in Term 2, Trinity’s intermediate girls soccer team travelled to Darebin International Sports Centre to contest the state soccer finals on the 30th of August.

Drawn in Group B, Trinity faced Brighton Secondary College, Northcote High School and Lavalla Catholic College.

The team featured some new players and quickly learned about playing positions, teamwork and tactics as they played against some of the best players in the state.

Trinity was forced to defend for large portions of the day and the defenders were kept busy as they tried to keep up with attacking plays from their opponents.

Unfortunately the girls were not able to score a goal for the day and finished with three losses.

Goal keeper Charlotte Leersen received plaudits from her teammates for her saves in goal, while Sophie Lane was a steady presence at centre back for the day. All players are to be congratulated for their efforts and for how they conducted themselves on and off the pitch.

Year 8 Boys State Soccer Finals

The Year 8 Boys soccer team also travelled to Darebin International Sports Centre to compete in the state soccer finals on Friday the 2nd of September, after prevailing in the Greater Western competition a fortnight earlier.

Trinity began their Group B campaign against Frankston High School and kicked with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half. However, the team was on the back foot after conceding two early goals, but regained their composure to get to half time trailing 0-2. Frankston kicked with the breeze in the second half and used it to their advantage, despite the best efforts of goal keeper Levi Duynhoven, who regularly got hands to the ball. The final score was 0-6.

The boys' next assignment was against Princes Hill Secondary College, who boasted quality players and were quickly ahead 5-0 as they chased a boost to their goal difference. But Trinity again regained its composure in the second half and defended bravely to finish with a 0-7 score line.

The final group match was against St Thomas Aquinas College Tynong with neither team able to make the final. The boys again defended with great effort and had the occasional foray forward, but were in the end beaten 0-4 due to some classy moments from the St Aquinas’ players.

The boys who played in defence throughout the day deserve credit in particular for their commitment to the task at hand under considerable pressure from their opposition. All players tried their best throughout the day as they strived to score a goal.

Congratulations to all players involved in the State soccer finals this year.
