Year 12
Class of 2023
Year 11 content has been completed across all subject areas, and students have started working on their year 12 content. With that in mind, I would like to pass on the following information to all parents of our year 11 students commencing year 12.
ATAR stands for Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank and is the ranking that eligible students earn after completing year the Higher School Certificate (HSC) with an ATAR pattern of study. To do this, students need to study at least six board endorsed subjects in Year 11 and at least five board endorsed subjects in Year 12. This rank is for universities to decide which students are offered places in courses.
An ATAR pattern of study is for students who want to go to university when school finishes. There are several other ways to get into university that don’t involve an ATAR.
In Year 12, students are able to drop a subject. This allows students to focus on their five strongest subjects or the five subjects that they enjoy the most. This will take place during Week 3 and can occur any time after that, prior to the HSC examinations. As students drop a subject, they will have study periods in their timetable. This will enable students time to study, work on completing assessment tasks and complete homework. If students have a study period during the last period of the day, they are able to sign out. However, they will need to return a signed permission note before this happens. If a student has a study period at the beginning of the day, they must arrive at school at the normal time and attend Connect.
The assessment schedule will be handed out to students on Tuesday in Week 3. Please familiarise yourself with this document as it has rules and procedures around assessments and examinations. It also clearly outlines all assessment tasks throughout the year. This booklet enables students to plan for upcoming assessments and design suitable study schedules.
Overseas, interstate and prolonged leave is not approved by the school. If a student does need to go on leave, they should see their Deputy Principal and acquire an extended leave form. This type of leave is recorded as explained leave if the school receives the correct documentation. If students miss assessment task, they will be awarded a mark of zero and will receive an n-award. Hand in tasks may be submitted online.
The government recommends a minimum attendance of 90% each year. The graphic depicts how the percentages may impact student learning.
Regular attendance has shown to greatly improve student outcomes during and post-school. It has also been proven to have a positive impact on student wellbeing.
