Cronulla excursion

Year 10 Environmental Management

Week 2 of Term 4, 2022 at Cecil Hills High School was highlighted by our Year 10 students’ Geography excursion to Cronulla Beach. Learn more about it from Ms Truong and Allegra Ng.

What was the purpose of the Cronulla Beach excursion?

Ms Truong: The Cronulla Beach excursion was held as part of a case study for the topic of Environmental Management. The students on the excursion conducted fieldwork for the topic. They investigated the different strategies used to manage the coastline and examined the effectiveness of these strategies, such as the Seabees wall and dune re-vegetation, in protecting sand dunes and reducing erosion along the beach.

How did the Cronulla Beach excursion deepen your understanding of coastline management?

Allegra Ng: The excursion deepened my understanding of how the coastline is protected. It was great to learn more about the sand dunes, the vegetation, and all the other strategies that were placed there to protect our coastline.

What was the highlight of the Cronulla Beach excursion for you?

Allegra Ng: It was awesome to see everything we’ve learnt about in Geography come to life. It was good to see how the vegetation around the coast holds everything together. It was good to see sand dunes and the coast in real life. It was much better than seeing them in worksheets! And of course, I really enjoyed running around with my friends.
