2022 PROFILES - What can we observe and learn from the statistics?

Looking at IMP statistics shows the complexity of a program that caters for the diverse needs and preferences of individual students within the CNPS community. The notes below, which refer to the statistics and graphs below, highlight various features of the IMP in 2022, with reference to statistics collected from 1995 onwards.

  • 129 students participated in the IMP in 2022
  • nearly all music lessons are timetabled on Fridays
  • 48 students play recorder, half of instrumental lesson participants, which is why recorder lessons continue to be timetabled on two days

2022 Profile of instrument By YEAR

  • the variability of students’ instrument choice results in differences in lesson numbers/types from year to year
  • there is a large number of Year 6 guitar and clarinet students this year
  • percussion and violin students are distributed unevenly through the population
  • there are fewer students from Year 4 participating, which is unusual
  • there are no saxophone students this year

2022 Profile of School Music Groups by YEAR

  • in general, the distribution of School Music Groups by year is widely variable, as usual
  • playing in School Music Groups is an activity which draws together students from across both years and units
  • a number of Year 1 students have just joined junior recorder ensemble in term 4
  • there are fewer students from Year 4 participating, reflecting statistics from lessons
  • this profile shows how recorder students start in junior recorder ensemble and graduate to senior ensemble as they gain skills

2022 Profile of gender by YEAR

  • the gender balance is relatively even, as usual
  • there are slightly more girls participating from in Years 1 and 4
  • there are slightly more boys participating from Year 3

2022 Profile of INSTRUMENT BY LESSON LENGTH

  • overall, 60% of students have 20-minute lessons, the remaining 40% have 30-minute lessons
  • 20-minute lessons are used in a variety of ways to facilitate:
  • small group lessons for beginners
  • paired lessons for younger players
  • students preparing for lower AMEB exams or similar standard of music
  • 30-minute lessons are almost exclusively used to facilitate:
  • paired lessons for students who require more than a paired 20-minute lesson, due to the level of music
  • students preparing for higher AMEB exams or similar standard of music
  • it is also important to know that:
  • lesson length is partly determined by families’ enrolment form preferences
  • lesson length is negotiated with parents where necessary to meet the musical needs of the student(s)
  • lesson type/length is adjusted to match the number of students who wish to participate, eg, 2/20 or 3/30
  • often, families’ preferred lesson length is reduced to compact the IMP compact due to lack of room availability
  • compacting the program also continues to reduce classroom disturbance overall
  • with an average of 32 lessons a year, a student participating in a 20-minute lesson will miss two days of school during the year
  • with an average of 32 lessons a year, a student participating in a 30-minute lesson will miss three days of school during the year
