Student Leadership

Paul Wentrock
My name is Paul Wentrock and I am the College Captain of 2020. Leadership is a term that is thrown around quite a bit, but what does it actually mean? For some it may be being the one who knows everything or is someone who is very commanding and can make good decisions. However, for me it is not so much leading the way, but rather walking together with others through thick and thin. I believe that this is best done when caring for everyone who has appointed me to this position by respecting and valuing them. It is also about being vulnerable and asking others for their input into decisions that need to be made.
I also believe that true leadership is done behind closed doors where sacrifice, hard work and commitment are displayed. A true leader knows that although it is tough now, the efforts put in will pay off in the long run without praise or a pat on the back. They get their rewards when their change makes a positive impact on the school allowing more students to laugh and smile. A true leader humbly serves day in day out wanting nothing physical in return.
As College Captain for 2020 I am committed to do my absolute best, going the extra mile to serve the community. I will continue to be myself, not acting any different just because I have a badge, because I am still the gentle giant who presented himself in front of the school at the end of 2019. I want to be approachable and get to know everyone just a little bit more and I will try and model my version of a true leader. I am also very excited to work with my fellow Captain Amelia and SAT Captains; Diana, Chantelle and Chinmay. As I told them; 2020 is going to be legendary!!

The question of “What excites you the most about serving as a College Captain this year?” is one that I have been asked many times in the last few weeks. The fact that I often cannot think of just one way to describe all of the motivations that I have for serving our College in this way is something that fills me with a great sense of optimism as we embark on 2020.
I remember so vividly beginning Year 8 and feeling intimidated by the Year 12s that I saw looming over me in the corridors. As a College Captain I would love to build relationships between year levels. I have always enjoyed working with both younger and older students because I think that this is a valuable way of collaborating and drawing on the unique strengths that we can all contribute. This is what I have admired about the past Captains of Endeavour College, their sense of community and their inclusivity, and I hope to play a role in ensuring that all students feel valued this year in the way that I have always felt at Endeavour.
I am incredibly passionate about serving our community here at Endeavour and the wider global community, and so I look forward to inspiring and helping to facilitate younger students in their interests in all fields, as well as encouraging them to explore all of the opportunities that we are so lucky to be provided. This servant leadership is something that I feel that everyone can model regardless of whether they have a formal leadership position or not. I am really looking forward to working with my fellow Student Executive, and the amazingly diverse SAT to enhance the culture of our school, to be the voice of the students and to model the values that I place such great importance in.
I believe that 2020 will be a great year, and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish together.

Student Action Team Training Day
On Friday 14 February, the Student Executive held a Training Day for members of the Student Action Team. The purpose of this day was to inform students of their responsibilities, roles and brainstorm future initiatives for the coming year.
Students were exposed to a range of presentations on vital skills such as how to run an effective meeting, public speaking skills and how to be an effective brand ambassador. These presentations were held by teachers of the Endeavour community, including Mr Pearse, Mrs Adolphi and Ms Green. Throughout the day students also participated in a range of activities to develop leadership skills that will be beneficial to them throughout the upcoming year and in the future. These activities included, ‘Spy Land’ which built trust between the members of the teams, the ‘Number Count’ game which encouraged organisation skills and the ‘Mine Field’ game which challenged communication skills. Additionally, each SAT participated in the ‘Language’ game where each team created their own unique language to communicate a specific message. Through this activity students learnt how to delegate roles and work as a team, whilst improvising for parts of the message which were not discussed as a team.
The day ended in a brainstorming session in SAT groups, where students had a chance to express any ideas or initiatives which they wanted to work on throughout the year. This Training Day was beneficial for all members of the SAT and was a day for everyone to create relationships within the group and develop skills which will set us all up for the year.

Student Leadership Assembly
On Friday the 21 February the Student Action Team, Village and Extra-curricular Leaders for 2020 were officially installed. This inaugural assembly was dedicated to inducting and acknowledging these new leaders in a personal and special way. As leaders we all felt proud and privileged that we were recognised and celebrated individually. The assembly also featured an inspirational speech from old scholar, and 2018 Dux, Bradyn Walsh. This influential speech from Bradyn filled the leaders with excitement and enthusiasm for the year ahead.
Bradyn’s speech discussed how to be an effective leader in the community, and the qualities a leader must possess in order to carry out their duties to the best of their ability. These qualities included effective communication skills and being genuinely passionate about what you are doing. Furthermore, his speech discussed the importance of leadership and taking advantage of opportunities presented during your schooling. He acknowledged that during his own time at Endeavour he regretted letting fear overcome him and hold him back from helping others and urged the students not to do the same. Bradyn gave both the leaders and all of the College’s students something to think about and use in their schooling and personal lives.
