Poetry Workshop with Mantra at The Royal Botanic Gardens
CAUGHT READ HANDED
On Friday 4 May, our book club Caught Read Handed was treated to a visit from Level 87 Book club representatives Simon, Elena and former student Korik. There was much passionate and enthusiastic discussion and our students were commended on how well they articulated their ideas. Level 87 book club runs on Wednesday afternoons during the school term after school at 100 Story Building, 92 Nicholson Street, Footscray VIC 3011. GIRLS WRITE UP STUDENT REFLECTIONS
On Friday 1 June, twenty of our students attended the Melbourne Museum for Girls Write Up which is an all-day festival for teens that teaches empowerment through writing and sharing stories. Here are some of their reflections:
"I thought Girls Write Up was a really great experience! I enjoyed the first speakers the most, they were really inspiring."
"Girls write up was an amazing experience that I really enjoyed and was thrilled to be a part of, thank you for an amazing day!"
"I’m glad I came. My favourite part was the opening speech by Candy Bowers."
"I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to join in on the excursion to Girls Write Up. The day was filled with laughter and lots of great writing pieces. It was such a privilege to be able to meet all those amazing creators and authors. Thank you so much for inviting me, I will definitely attend next year if I get the chance."
COME HERE AND SAY IT
Come here and say it, sing it or play it is a creative spoken word performance opportunity for our students. On Friday 29 July, during lunchtime in the library, the audience enjoyed listening to poetry and songs from students in Years 7 - 12.
POETRY WORKSHOP
On Tuesday 19 June, 25 of our students attended a Poetry Workshop in the Botanic Gardens, facilitated by Mantra, one of Australia’s most respected Hip-Hop artists. Four of these students will go on to compete in the heats for the OutLoud Eco Slam in the hopes of going on to perform at the Melbourne Writers Festival in August.
