CHESS TOURNAMENT

On the 1st of May, Footscray City College hosted an interschool chess tournament, with nineteen of our students participating. In the tournament students played a series of seven individual games, competing against both fellow students, and students from Westbourne Grammar School, Melbourne High School and Viewbank Secondary College. It was a tight tournament, with many matches pushing the time limit and a high level of competitive play. In the end, Footscray City finished third on 16 points, just behind Westbourne Grammar with 17.5, and Melbourne High on 22. There were also some excellent student achievements, with George Dogaris tying for second place in the overall individual competition, and taking home the gold medal for the year 9 – 10 division. Melissa Ang finished second in the Girl’s Open, and as such both her and George have qualified for the state championships later this year. Eliana Gelsi put in an excellent performance as well, and took home third place in the Girl’s Open. All students competed admirably, improving on their last tournament outing, and should be congratulated on making the tournament such a success.
