Year One/Two Inquiry

The One/Two focus for Inquiry is positive growth mindset, solving conflicts and showing respect to others. For a STEM activity, the students focused on Engineering and Maths. After talking about teamwork and respect, we assigned the students some cooperative rotational tasks revolving around building and counting. The students experimented with different building materials (cards, cups, containers and unifix blocks) to build a solid base which could then support a tower - all the while working as a team.

 

The students quickly figured out that bases had to have the most materials and decrease in number as their towers went higher. The students counted how many pieces of building material they used and then tried to beat their record with a higher tower. When faced with a different ideas on how to tackle a problem when working in a team, the group considered ways to express and describe their thinking, including the expression of feelings about ideas.
