STUDENT WELLBEING

SWeLL Week

SWell Week

Last week we had a fantastic SWeLL (Student Wellbeing) week. During this time teachers set up classroom routines and incorporated fun activities to help learn about your child. Throughout the week there was much happening with many guest speakers presenting at assemblies. Including; a ‘Drum Out’ session with ‘Mr Beat’, Uncle Bill (an Elder from the Wurrundjeri Tribe) and Jayde Van Dyk (an AFLW Carlton Footballer). Also to mention a highlight of the week being the annual Staff vs Student Leaders sports match which this year was volleyball.

Classroom teachers placed an emphasis on ‘Growth Mindsets’ and our week concluded with our final assembly involving a whole school showcase. Growth Mindsets encourage students to believe in themselves and not to remain ‘stuck’ in a fixed mindset about their school learning. Through positive self talk, self belief and an ‘I can’ attitude students are encouraged to try all learning tasks with a will to succeed. This is based on the research by Carol Dweck and a short presentation can be found here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUWn_TJTrnU

Lastly, a huge thank you to all students and families for providing coins for our coin line. Through your support we were able to raise $734 for our sponsor children in the Philippines.

Here are some short reflections by some students about some of the SWeLL Week activities:

Today we went to the hall to watch the Uncle Bill show. We did a fun dance and I was a lizard. There were people playing: hunters, women, kangaroos and other types of animals. Uncle Bill showed us pictures of aboriginal animals and told us about aboriginal people.

Frieda Coleman

I liked when we did a crazy dance and we learned a little bit of aboriginal language. He also told us about Aboriginies. We learnt about their Gods. My favourite was the snake and dingo.

James Blokkeerus

Today we went to the hall and saw Uncle Bill’s show. Today I saw Uncle Bill and he was aboriginal elder. He told us about aboriginal things and he was very funny. I did a dance because I was a kangaroo and I got killed by a hunter. Luca Cifone

My favourite part of the Drum Out show were the jokes. Lucas Pysk

I liked Mister Beats drumming and jokes. Alana McParland

Thank you and wishing you and your families a terrific 2019!
