No Power?  No Problem!

When the Power is off..

The power was off at school (and the surrounding neighbourhood) most of the day on Friday, so all students and staff  spent the day off-site.  Three groups of students piled onto three different buses and headed off for an educational adventure around town.

Dalet & Hey headed off for a historical mapping trail through the centre of Mildura. Highlights included the beautiful heritage buildings, RSL displays from various wars and putting in to practice Geographical skills of map reading and using grid references.  Years 9 and 10 researched and conducted interviews for their Geography class tourism project. The students also spent half an hour touring the current art exhibitions at the Art Vault. The day was capped off by a bush walk at King's Billabong. This helped all of the students who had chosen to wear pedometers to reach some huge tallies!   We were

blessed with stunning weather! What a great day!

ABCs and Aleph

Aleph and ABCs set out to “Discover Mildura”, or more accurately to discover Mildura as it used to be. At our first stop, Rio Vista, students were quite horrified to discover some of the hardships of pioneer life. In particular, they were quite shocked at the idea of having to cope with a chamber pot under the bed and the carting of buckets of water upstairs to use a hip bath for bathing - I think they will appreciate their daily showers a great deal more now! At the Information Centre  we discovered lots more about Mildura’s past by watching “W.B” jump down from his statue and tell us about the early settlement days. We also discovered lots of other interesting bits and pieces in the Information Centre and spent some time exploring our wonderful library. Lunch at Jaycee Park gave us an opportunity to let off a bit of steam and get some exercise, but we needed to conserve some energy for the last stop. At the Old Homestead, local historian, Mr. Bob Walton provided us with a variety of “olden days” games so we could experience life without modern technology. So sack races, rope quoit games, old skipping rope races, egg and spoon races and stick relays were entered into with great gusto and thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Bet & Gimmel

With the lights out, our Bet and Gimmel classes ventured into the big wide world for a day of fun activities.

We started the day at the Inland Botanical Gardens where the students explored, participated in Art activities, and enjoyed a tractor-train tour of the property.

The troupe then made its way to Lock 11 for lunch and the royal treatment with Lock-master Julian Kelleher. After demonstrating the movements of the lock, the students had a tour of the weir. Huge thanks to Mr. Kelleher for taking time out of his busy day to look after us!

Finally, our students descended upon Arnnie’s Laserforce for the much anticipated chance to battle it out with each other. The students had a wild time zapping everyone in sight! While the biggest smiles seemed reserved for those attacking their teachers, Mrs. Williams, Mrs. Vea, and Mr. Joel were all too happy to dish out a little revenge of their own.

Friday was a terrific day for our two classes with many students hoping for more power outages in the near future!
