Learning and Teaching

Making Maths Personal!

At Galilee, we aim to ensure that all learners are making visible growth in Mathematics across the curriculum, regardless of their background or ability.  Our teachers recognise that to achieve this goal, learning must be personalised to meet the needs of each individual learner. Our whole school teaching approach is based on helping each child achieve success.

For students to make optimal progress, teachers must be constantly aware of each child's individual progress against the curriculum and the Learning Framework in Number, and have an explicit plan for moving them forward. Teachers and learners work together to know where learners are at, what their next step is, and what they have to do to get there.

Our ongoing Maths assessment helps us make informed decisions to make learning more engaging for learners. The Learning Framework in Number helps teachers to target each child’s point of need. Assessment is used to measure improvement and this is fed back to the learner. Assessment is continuous and both teacher and learner can respond to progress made.

Students and teachers have a shared, clear understanding about what progress looks like. This allows targeted feedback to occur, precise to the learner’s point of need or ‘zone of proximal development’. We use shared success criteria – What does it look like to succeed in this area? – and student-friendly 'I Can...' statements, the 'footsteps' of learning.

As seen in these photos of our Junior school classrooms, teachers plan lessons which target each child’s point of need, differentiating tasks so that each child can succeed in an engaging, relevant, targeted learning environment.

St Francis of Assisi Sustainability Market

On 21st June, Galilee will be going green and holding a Sustainability Market. The market is named after St Francis of Assisi. He was the patron Saint of ecology, so he loved and cared for all of God’s creations. He was a steward of creation.  The St Francis of Assisi Market will be a chance for the Galilee community to come together and purchase products that will be made by the students. Some classes have already started collecting items and designing their products. The money raised from the sale of products will go into Galilee’s Sustainable Kitchen Garden program.

We would love parents to help us in any way they can. This might be in one of three ways:

1: Donating items that can be repurposed or reused.

2. Donating your time to help in a classroom.

3. Donating your time to help at a stall at the market.

The Year 6’s will be working on advertising in the next week, so keep an eye or ear out for their finished products!
