Warraymalaya Retreat
At the end of last term, selected students from Years 8-11 attended the Armidale Diocese Catholic Secondary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Retreat, “Warraymalaya” - Stand and Support/Together in the Gamilaraay/Yuwalaraay language. This year, the retreat was held in Coffs Harbour. It was a successful retreat where the students had a great time learning from some wonderful mentors. Locky and Fleur, from Milan Dhiiyaan, taught the students several songs in language and the corresponding traditional dances, while two wonderful representatives from The Missions of Gods Love, focused on workshops with the students highlighting Christian teachings on this year’s theme - “Fidelity in Relationships”. Through this combination of Indigenous culture and Catholic teachings, the students began their journey of connection to country, whilst growing closer to God.
The students also had a chance to go up against staff and peers in an epic sumo zorb battle which lead to a few people biting off more than they could chew. A brave many, faced their fears to overcome the sky wire and giant swing and a lucky few managed to have a go in the pouring rain! Water-logged and mud soaked, the rain dissipated and the students were rewarded with a campfire under the stars. Gumbaynggirr Elder, Uncle Mark sat with us, sharing passionate stories of his peoples, while marshmallows and damper were toasted on the flames.
It was a perfect ending to a great retreat. Special thanks needs to be given to staff members who volunteered their time, and the continuing support of the Catholic School’s Office.
