Music - Week 21

Music Tour

For a week during the school holidays, 95 students and nine staff attended the Australian International Music Festival in Sydney. It was a jam-packed eight days for the Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band and Chamber Choir, with all three ensembles performing at some incredible venues including the Opera House, City Recital Hall, Maritime Museum and St James’ Church. The students represented the College beautifully and apart from the odd reminder about noise after curfew in the hotel, they were really well behaved and great fun to be around!

Musically, all three ensembles really excelled in their performances and the improvement in their playing was obvious as the week progressed. There were hundreds of ensembles participating in the festival from Asia, America and Australia, ranging from school to university to semi-professional groups. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to witness the work of other musicians from around the world.

Each ensemble involved in the festival was adjudicated by a panel of world-renowned judges and received a ‘gold’, ‘silver’ or ‘bronze’ award. The Chamber Orchestra and Concert Band both received silver awards, which was a very pleasing result! The Chamber Choir were one of only two choirs out of over 20 choirs involved in the festival to receive a gold award. The only other choir to receive a gold award was the Auckland Youth Choir, which was made up of young adults aged 18-30. A very impressive result for our Chamber Choir!

The Music Department extends their thanks to the College for their support of the Tour; it was a really wonderful experience for our musicians!
