Science Club

Science Club is open to all abilities and is an opportunity for students to explore, investigate and design. It is a casual club held on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm. Each term there is a different focus and activities occur around a theme. Last Semester the themes of 'design' and 'create' were the basis for the lunchtime activities. Patience and focus were required over a few lunch times to complete the tasks.

First up, an engineering challenge was set to design the highest spaghetti tower that could suspend a marshmallow. Students were given limited resources and a set time. Trials were made and improvements in the original designs occurred.

The next design challenge involved creating a balloon powered boat. Glue guns were put to great use as students came up with new ways to use old takeaway plastic containers. Students needed to think about what made a boat move further and faster in the water. Some had great success and managed to move the boats across the school pool whilst other boats spun in circles. This is all part of the life of a Scientist - not everything works out as planned!

A quick activity on how to heat a water balloon with a flame and not make it pop was next. This then led to another design challenge. A twist on the egg drop, students needed to come up with a container for a water balloon that when dropped from a high building prevented the balloon from popping. Students tested at multiple levels and redesigned original ideas to save the water balloon from destruction.

The first activity of the Create theme involved students creating simple motors using batteries and homopolar magnets. This required patience and many readjustments to get it to work.

By the middle of Term Two, students were feeling the stress of assessments and so it was appropriate that stress balls were created using slime as a centre filling. Students took the time to get the consistency of the slime correct and had to overcome the challenge of delivering slime into a thick balloon before sealing the final product. Much fun was had by all and was a favourite among students.

The next Create themed activity was a buzz game. Using electrical wiring and light, students made buzz wire games and were able to then test their skills and dexterity as they moved a wand around a wire bent in many directions. Students’ buzz wire games were much more difficult than the popular game Operation.

The semester was finished off with making propeller cars. Some setbacks occurred, with wound elastics flying off the cars. However, this creative activity had much potential!

This semester, Science Club will continue on Wednesday lunchtimes at 1:00pm. The next topic involves Science in Food. New members are welcome.

St George's Art

St George's Art has become a premier annual event in art education in Western Australia, attracting schools from all sectors. Each year this exhibition gathers momentum as one of the most important art education events in the Western Australian student art calendar and provides an outstanding opportunity for secondary schools to present students’ work in the unique “gallery” of St George’s Cathedral, Perth.

Congratulations to Year 12 ATAR Visual Arts students; Eloise Levy, Ruby Monaghan, and Sashi Tandon on having their artworks selected for exhibition in the prestigious St George's Cathedral Art Awards. The exhibition is open to the public and runs until 28 July at St George's Cathedral on St Georges Terrace, Perth.

Parent Student Teacher interviews

The Parent Student Teacher interviews held this week in the St Louis Sports Centre were a wonderful opportunity for parents, students and teachers to engage in the valuable exercise of reflection and feedback. The interviews provided to students the experience of celebrating their strengths from last semester as well as indicating the areas that require additional focus for this semester. The importance of feedback for students to assist them in their future learning, to highlight the ‘gaps’ in their knowledge and skills and therefore indicate the target areas is essential in order for students to maximise their achievement.

Pilgrimage Movie night

The John XXIII College Pilgrimage program offers our students and staff the opportunity for growth and transformation through the experience of service, reflection and prayer. Forty-seven Year 11 students and 12 staff members will have the opportunity to travel to Beswick in the Northern Territory, Cambodia, India and Timor Leste in September to broaden their world view and discover how they can become ‘men and women for others’ and ‘seekers of truth and doers of justice’.

The funds raised in the Solidarity Walk, Movie Night, Raffle and Sausage Sizzles will be donated directly to the communities that we visit to help support their programs related to health, education, building enterprises, income generation activities etc.

Please support the program by attending the Pilgrimage Movie night on 7 August at 7:00pm in the GBLT.
