House Athletics

A cool and windy day greeted everyone for the Annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival last Friday. With a full day of events, many students put in amazing efforts for their Houses as they continued to give their all. The friendly yet competitive atmosphere at our sporting carnivals makes them special days for all involved. Well done to all the Heads of House and House Captains for their organisation and a special congratulations to the Berry students and staff on taking out the Grand Aggregate. Thanks to all the staff, parents and College Community who came and either helped or supported the students.

Swimming

A full report by the swimming captains on the ICCES Swimming Carnival held last week in Melbourne should appear in this edition of the newsletter.

Table Tennis and Badminton

Congratulations to those boys and girls who represented the school at MSAC last Wednesday in the annual ICCES Table Tennis and Badminton competition. We had our best Table Tennis result ever including the senior boys’ team who came 2nd in their division.

Football

For those boys in Years 9-11 who have not made up their mind where you are playing football this coming season they should turn up to Hamilton Kangaroos GSWJFL U 16.5 team training next Wednesday night at Pedrina Park from 4-30pm to 5-30pm. There WILL be a team this season and it is a great opportunity for a group of school mates to play together in this exciting newly formed competition.

There will only be 4 or 5 away games to Portland/Heywood area and if you are YEAR 11 and just overage we can apply for overage permits potentially.

For more information please email myself at the school ASAP.

Team APP

These have been set up for many our sports so far, this current season and are a great way to get instant notifications and messages on their smartphones or iPad about what is happening in the sport. Players and/or parents should get an email from the head of sport or coach setting them up and then can request to join. For more information, you can download “Team App” in the app stores or go to www.teamapp.com and start searching for “College” teams.

ICCES Swimming Report

The 2020 swim season has gone, finishing with the ICCES competition on the 4th of March at MSAC. It was great to see the keen team of swimmers who endured the long trip to put all their training to work and show up the other schools. College placed in 30 events, allowing us to maintain the Star Shield for the 8th consecutive year.

The College finished in 6th place on a total of 739.5 points and 4th place in the male aggregate on 425 points. Swimmers must be proud and commend each other on the excellent sportsmanship and enthusiasm they showed on the day.

There were seven swimmers who achieved a placing in an individual A event. Congratulations to Oscar Hausler, Lachlan Rees, Lily Schroeder, Ted Koch, Isaac Shaw, Gabriel Marshall and Jack Sharp on their efforts. We also had six relay teams place on the day with the Year 9 and VCE boys’ medley teams placing 1st and 2nd respectively and 3rd placings to the Year 7, 9 and VCE boys’ and Year 9 girls’ freestyle relays.

We would like to thank Mr Ben Singh and Mr Leigh Alexander for the amount of effort and support they have invested into the swim team over the season. Likewise, thanks to the swimmers who represented College at any of the levels over the season and who have attended trainings.

Cricket

Last weekend resulted in both elation and despair for College CC.

Elation-

College Blue U14 7-140  defeated Hamilton 74 to book themselves a spot in this coming weekend’s Grand Final against Grampians. A solid team effort was the catalyst for the win;  most notably a fielding display with no dropped catches. As they say catches win you matches and this was definitely the case on the weekend.

There were also several stand out individual performances. George Austin was the star with the ball taking 5 wickets, Jack Wortley 2 and Henry Bensch economical with 1-6 off 8 overs. With the bat, Henry Bensch made 53no, George Huf anchoring the innings with a patient 23 and Will McKellar 12 to add to his first catch wicket keeping since joining the club in the new school year. We wish all the best to our College side and also to the several College students representing Grampians this coming weekend.

A-grade Ladies Play their semi-final on Friday night against Casterton at Myrniong beginning at 18:00. Should they win this game, they will play in their Grand Final on Sunday at Melville Oval. We wish several students and also one committed staff member luck in their quest for ultimate glory.

Dispair-

College Gold U14 8-150  saw their post-Christmas winning run come to a devastating end with defeat to Grampians making 7-160 in response. With the bat, openers Jack Austin 53no and Fergus Peddie 26 led the way at the top of the innings, however, 5 ducks from the remaining batsmen failed to build on their impressive start. With the ball, Jock Barrie and George Pern led the attack with two wickets each, but it was not enough as Grampians passed the total and progress to this week’s Grand Final. A massive thank you to Johnny Austin and Riley Alexander for coaching and the parental support week-in week-out. You have all certainly done the school and the College Cricket Club proud with your commitment throughout the season.

A-grade also felt the bitter disappointment of missing out on finals by a narrow 0.5 points. The positives for the season have been the development of Riley Alexander and Ben McCure into genuine A-grade players. In addition to this, the debut by Fergus Roberts shows the future is bright for the College Cricket Club.
