PE

In PE, term 3 will see a focus on strength, balance, coordination and flexibility as students explore the concepts of Gymnastics. These physical abilities developed through the gymnastics activities underpin most other sporting pursuits. Rest assured, activities performed are low-risk. The focus is on participation, keeping the apparatus low to the ground, modifying activities for individual needs and exploring the basics.

In the final term of school the PE focus will be on “Bat and Ball” games to further develop children's motor and coordination skills.  Each activity will be aimed at a level that suits your child’s own ability by allowing students learn through self-discovery rather than coach direction. Questioning is used as a strategy to engage the students in changing the activity to increase participation and to make the activity more or less challenging.

The most important learning focus for PE this year and every year, is to improve skills needed to be a successful team member, empathise with others and use resilience and a growth mindset to overcome challenges.

German

In our weekly German lessons, reception students use language in context through familiar routines, games, songs and repetition.  They exchange greetings and information making connections between English and German.  Students interact with peers through action-related talk and play and in routine exchanges such as opening and closing lessons, naming the day of the week and responding to the class roll.  They play simple games to reinforce vocabulary knowing that repetition builds confidence. Question and response plays a big part in developing dialogue between both teacher and student as well and between peers.   Each lesson provides opportunities for students to listen and respond. They also participate in guided activities such as songs, rhymes and games to reinforce vocabulary using simple repetitive language. Oral interaction continues to play a large part in every lesson. Encouraging everyone to have a go and to participate to progress.

Students  have shown they can respond to greetings and roll call in German, count to ten and state their age, identify colours and are beginning to recognise different words to express how they are feeling.

This semester we will further develop our understanding of German as another language, continuing to look at the world and recognise where we are and that other languages are spoken in different places.  Students will learn with two puppets, characters visiting from Germany, Felix (a frog) and Franzi (a duck).

Ask your child to share with you something they have learned or tell you what they can say IN German.  See what they can teach you!

Science

Reception students attend Science lessons twice per week. Our inquiry based Science approach allows students to wonder and become curious about the world around them. Students are encouraged to ask questions and explore through observations and investigations using the 5 senses.

Last term, students explored Living Things in Biological Sciences and this term we will be focussing on The Weather in Earth and Space Sciences. Students have already begun wondering and exploring the Weather and Seasons and are enthusiastic about their learning this term!

Week 4 of this term will be Science Week. In Science Week we will have a focus on this years Science Week topic - Game Changers - and will inquire into inventions and sustainability.
