Year 4 Camp Success

The Year 4 students attended the Phillip Island Camp last week. This was fantastic school camp with lots of great outdoor and challenge activities on site, with off-site activities including beach play and the Penguin Parade. Thank you to all teachers, educational support staff and parents who made certain that the camp was a great success.

Acknowledging Workload

The new Victorian Government Schools Agreement 2022 includes the first acknowledgement of the heavy workload undertaken by all school-based staff. Throughout Term 1 staff members have, on a number of occasions, worked far beyond the standard 38-hour week. Staff on the Year 5 Camp worked at least 16 hours on top of the standard hours in that week. The Year 4 Camp required staff to work at least 12 hours in excess of the normal working week. During the term a number of staff members also presented at parent forums, attended School Council meetings and Parent/Teacher Interviews which meant that they also worked in excess of the standard 38-hour week.

Every time a staff member contributes extra hours it is at the expense of time that they could spend with their own families. I call on the Mount View Community to consider the sacrifices made by staff members in support of the students and in developing their learning opportunities. We are proud of our government schoolteachers and the work that they do and so I expect that they are always treated respectfully by parents.

On occasions, some parents display an unhelpful customer/service provider relational attitude when they speak with or email teachers. Some parents make unfair demands on teachers. It is vital that parents view teachers as the professionals who are experienced in education, in schools, with all students, generally over many years. As professionals, teachers work diligently to benefit all students in their care by balancing competing demands in complex circumstances. While some parents may only want what they feel is best for their individual child, the teachers work to meet the needs of all students in a just and fair manner.

Ride2School Day

Year 6 students Aaron and Sean have been demonstrating great leadership in promoting Ride2School Day. At the Friday afternoon assembly they reported their findings to the student body. Today’s results were:

  • 20% of students rode, scooted or skated to school
  • 46% walked to school
  • 33% arrived by car
  • 1% used public transport

The boys reported that the Active Travel to School rate increased from 37% last week to a huge 66% this week. They also encouraged the students to make active travelling a daily or weekly habit.

End of Term 1

Term 1 will end at 2:30 pm on Thursday 6 April. School will resume on Monday 24 April, and this will be followed by the Anzac Day Holiday on Tuesday 25 April.

In order to allow time for the assembly on Thursday 6 April, lunch will be one hour earlier. Lunchtime will be 12:20 – 1:30 on that day, followed by an assembly beginning at 1:45 pm. Students should all bring their lunch to school on that day.
